Students who have been identified as gifted or talented often present classroom teachers with unexpected challenges. Conversely, teachers are often surprised to discover that students whose classroom behavior is less than ideal are frequently highly intelligent, talented people. While untrained responses to these students can result in strained relationships, teachers who understand "how gifted kids are wired" can often help them achieve remarkable results. TeachersFirst developed this site to help classroom teachers and other educators better recognize and serve students with high intellectual abilities - either in specific areas or generally. The individualized techniques that can accomplish this are often similar to those used when adapting instruction to meet other individualized needs. The following pages offer strategies for identifying gifted and talented students, responding to their needs, and managing specific issues or problems which may arise in working with these students. As with most education topics, there is no single "right answer" for helping gifted students excel.
