In the Classroom

Use the learning page as a launch pad for planning your own lessons in conjunction with the vast array of resources available from the Library of Congress. Many of the documents and images are in the public domain and can therefore be used as visuals in other multimedia projects created by teachers and students. Be sure to read the permissions. Share an image on your projector or interactive whiteboard or a voice recording to start a lesson. Assign students to explore and explain collections you select. Be sure to check out the self-directed professional development modules, as well.
 This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free video(s) on this site during a unit on Westward expansion, particularly in discussing the perils of moving people cross-country during that time period. Play the clips over your projector, making sure to pause in between to summarize what happened as well as answer any questions students may have. If looking for a follow-along or sheet students need to complete during the movie, we recommend quickly creating one using a site such as Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

This annotated bibliography was created for K-12 teachers by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The authors, both Native Americans, have reviewed a large collection of K-12 books dealing with North American Indians, noting biases and inaccuracies, as well at those texts which provide accurate representations of Indian culture.
