This website, created by the American Academy of Pediatrics, provides a basic list of items for parents to think about at the start of the school year. Some are obvious (i.e. what day does school begin), but many are deeper thoughts to ponder.

In the Classroom

You may want to post this link on your class website during the summer months so new students (and parents) can take a look at the checklist over the summer break. If you send home a "Back to School" newsletter prior to the start of the school year, be sure to list this link for parents.

In the Classroom

Use this website as a way to wake your students up with a brain teaser at the beginning of every class. Before students come in, access the website on an interactive whiteboard or projector and click on "Grab Bag." Click on "Math Teaser," and leave the site up as students are coming in to the room. Once class starts and students have had a chance to read it, ask for answers and use the question as a way to get discussion rolling. The site only posts one teaser a month, but there is an archive with a wealth of teasers that will allow this application far more than once a month!
