This New York Times article discusses the efforts to assess the impact of the grounding of an oil-laden freighter off Unalaska island in 2004.

tag(s): alaska (25), oil (45), oil spill (21), pollution (67)

In the Classroom

Use this article in a discussion of oil spills and other human caused disasters. Have students read the article "popcorn" style in class, with a student reading a paragraph and then randomly selecting another student to read another paragraph, and continuing passing along reading until the article is complete. Compare the effects of this oil spill to that of the 2010 BP oil spill, noting with students the dramatically different results when even more oil is spilled. This would be great for an earth sciences or government classroom.

The famous 1940 expedition around Baja California, made by John Steinbeck and Edward Ricketts, was carefully retraced by a team of biologists in spring of 2004. Their observations of invertebrates found along the intertidal zone are documented in an online log. Visitors can compare the recent findings with what Steinbeck recorded in his 1951 book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez. This site provides a great opportunity to integrate environmental science and literature.
