This earth science site virtually engages students in scientific research. Middle school students join "science mentors" to gather data and interpret direct and indirect evidence to propose multiple hypotheses of what life was like in Montana 60-70 million years ago. Created at U.C. Berkeley with support from the National Science Foundation, this is an extremely well-organized site.

tag(s): fossils (39), paleontology (28)

In the Classroom

Use this site as a paired or individual activity while learning about archaeology. The site is a little old and clunky, so teachers will need to preview it on the interactive whiteboard to show students how it works. To speed things along, have students write or type their own journal separately, rather than using the one provided by the site. Try a tool like Google Docs, reviewed here, making it easier to share and turn in after the fact.

This is the online companion to an exhibit currently running at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Download the Ipix plugin to take the virtual tour of the exhibit, check out the live butterfly webcam, or view quicktime movies of butterflies in action. This is a great online excursion for students who don't have their own butterflies to observe. The videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

tag(s): butterflies (13), insects (69)

Take your students on a virtual tour of the butterfly conservatory using an interactive whiteboard or projector.

Here's another great site from San Francisco's Exploratorium. Learn how researchers study the jungle, both on-site and in the laboratory. Users with high-speed connections will enjoy the Quicktime movie interviews with the scientists - further proof that science can be engaging, interesting, even fun. A few resources on this site require Flash, most don't, and there is a lot of information here.

This large metasite offers a well-organized collection of scores of links relating to the study and categorization of insects. Like most sites of this nature, there are no explanations of the links, so you may have to hunt to find what you're after. We've included this one because of the number of resources the authors have found.

Here's a collection of science lesson plans covering disciplines from geology to earth science, chemistry, and general science. Each includes complete procedures, standards references, and discussion. Some of these lessons use video clips as an integral component, so teachers will want to plan accordingly.

tag(s): dna (44), evolution (85), genetics (76)

In the Classroom

The lesson plans here are excellent! Choose from many lessons (levels 4-12) to use in class to save you time. All lessons have a summary explaining what you and students will encounter with that lesson. Some example titles are The Ladder of Life where through video and Web-based activities, the students will develop a greater understanding of what DNA does in a cell. Students will be able to assemble DNA parts in order to simulate DNA strands. They will also have the opportunity to experimentally view DNA through an extraction technique included in the lesson. Another is Evolution: Its Effect Throughout Geological Time and the Controversy where students review the basics of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. They use the World Wide Web to explore the various stages of evolution, over geological time, and learn how each organism fits into the evolutionary story. These are just two representatives of how the many lessons are presented.

Try this elementary science page if your curriculum includes the study of air, air pressure, and the effects of temperature on air, buoyancy, and the like. Much of the content is devoted to hot air and helium balloons, but there's plenty of science for the younger set here.

tag(s): air (106), temperature (35)

In the Classroom

Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to the study of air, gas, and phases of matter. The site has some short video clips that would be an excellent addition to any lesson on the fore-mentioned. Open the clips for viewing, and show students their lesson in action. This is a great example of a real world use of the knowledge they just attained! Share the site on the class wiki or web page to allow students to review it both in and out of the classroom.

There are dozens of examples of how the earth's climate has or has not shifted over the past 100 years, and most of these have detailed graphs illustrating the data. Middle and high school teachers will find this one a great tool for illustrating both the science and the math behind the efforts to monitor the earth's climate.

Though not designed specifically for students, this site, containing a wealth of information on ways to minimize dangers to people from forest fires, includes many examples of how man and his environment can be at odds with one another. In addition to the scientific issues involved in fire control and prevention, this site would contribute to a discussion on ecosystems and encroachment into wilderness areas.

tag(s): ecosystems (72), environment (240), fire (22), fire prevention (16), fire safety (16)

In the Classroom

As your students study about safety or environmental issues, include this site as a resource. Ask students to create a fire pro and con list as they discuss the more obvious safety issues of fire and the balancing role that fire can play in renewing habitats and nature's cycles. Extend learning by using an online graphic organizer tool such as bubbl.us, reviewed here, to map out the many impacts that wildland fires can have.

This is a collection of downloadable historical images of life in Alaska. Image quality is adequate for either web or most publication use. The search feature - the only way to access images - finds species easily, but doesn't do as well with place names. The images are from several cultural heritage institutions across Alaska. Each institution has it's own policies regarding conditions for the use of its images. Some maybe used freely, and others may have restrictions. Be sure to check with the institute. Each image has an "identifier" number and you will need to contact the particular institute with that number to find out their "use" policies.
