Enjoy these engaging and "quick to solve" story problems every day of the year. Topics include content familiar to kids such as Dog Years, The 10 Second Rule, and House of Cards. Following each short story is a question for three different age groups - wee ones (preschool), little kids (k-2), and big kids (3rd grade and up). Sign up to receive problems daily by email or check the website daily for new problems.

tag(s): preK (279), problem solving (272)

In the Classroom

Do you have parents who want ideas to help with math (or make it fun) at home? Share this site as an easy way to do math and discuss problem solving at home. Instead of assigning endless worksheets, consider a family bedtime math challenge that parents and kids can do together. Use the problems in a math center - differentiate by choosing different questions from the stories for different student needs. After solving problems, change the numbers in questions to provide additional practice. Display the question of the day as a beginning of class activity or to use as a daily math journal entry.

Ever use a number or statistic in a presentation and see the eyes of audience gloss over in misunderstanding or cluelessness? Perhaps you have trouble making number sense out of large figures. Try NumberQuotes! Simplistic and to the point, this tool allows you to enter a number into the search bar, and it will generate a list of quotes related to your number. Follow directions about the number entry format (words or numerals). Find fast, easy comparisons at your fingertips without tedious hours of detailed research.

This tool is great when discussing numbers that are difficult for students to assimilate, such as exponents or population growth. In elementary grades, use it for 100th day celebrations! Help students develop number sense about large figures in economics, social studies, or science. Share this site with students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and type in the number such as the population of a country. It will then generate comparisons that are more student friendly. Keep this reference handy as a link on your class web page to help students comprehend numbers they encounter in informational texts or even in math class.

In the Classroom

View videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector. If you allow students to explore on their own, take caution since they could click and go elsewhere on YouTube. To share a single video safely at a center, use a tool such as SafeShareTV, reviewed hereand create a shortcut to the SafeShare page directly on the desktop. Share a link to this site with parents through your classroom website or newsletter for students to view at home. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, these videos may not be viewable. You could always view the videos at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid reviewed here to download the videos from YouTube.

Find math advice, tips, ideas, games, and e-books to help bring math alive. Activities focus on two age groups, 3 - 5 and 5 - 7. The free e-books have math themes. The site's origin is British, so the "maths" curriculum or terms may be slightly different from the U.S. But numbers are still numbers! The standards are from the U.K. Don't miss the "jargon busters" under the Expert Help menu for parents to understand the math terms teachers may use. Although the site has links to items for sale, there is enough free material to be worthwhile. On some of the interactives you must click the "mark it" check mark to see if your answer is correct or not.
