Make music a web 2.0 interactive experience using this "mashup" of musical YouTube videos, all in the key of B Flat. If you can access YouTube videos at school, you will open the eyes and ears of those who never thought they would even care about music. See twenty different "instruments," both traditional and electronic, playing excerpts YOU combine by starting and controlling the volume on your choice of instruments. They sound great together or in any combination you choose. If you click "More info," you will find out FAQ and more about the project and its creator, including how it was done.

In the Classroom

Test this site to be sure you can open it at school. Then turn up your speakers and open this site on a projector or -- even better -- interactive whiteboard to begin a music class, discuss key signatures, pitch, or instrumentation, and allow students to mix and remix their choice of sounds in harmonious blend. In science class, use the various sounds and an oscilloscope to teach about sound waves and the physical nature of sound. Challenge your musically gifted students to create a very simple version of this musical "machine" by recording and embedding videos of their own in a class music and technology wiki. Upload the videos to a school-friendly site such as SchoolTube reviewed here or TeacherTube reviewed here to avoid filtering issues. Set up a simpler face-to-face option by allowing student "conductors" to "turn on and off" multiple instruments and objects in your music classroom all playing the same pitch.

Bring CSI to your classroom! Use this entertaining and interactive website to learn science concepts using forensic studies. Follow one of three adventures: Rookie Training (Beginner,) Canine Caper (Intermediate,) or Burning Star (Advanced.) Collect evidence, ask questions, and use the evidence to act as a forensic scientist while using scientific inquiry. Create a conclusion and form theories by using evidence to solve problems. Registration is not required, but doing so allows students to save their work. Registration does NOT require an email, just a username and password. You might want to save the students usernames and passwords somewhere safe! Students not registering can enter as a guest. Teachers can view additional activities, links, and materials by clicking on "Fun Stuff." Click on "Game Features" to find information on roles of different forensics investigators, a walk through to assist in the adventures, and FAQ's. This site requires Adobe Reader. This site is full of great information about construction equipment, perfect for invention units, physics of simple machines, engineering, and more. There is also a link to learn more about anti-mine equipment, sure to spark some serious class discussion with older students.

In the Classroom

During a physics unit on simple machines, have students look at the various components of the heavy equipment and analyze which simple machines they see as PART of these huge machines. Doing a unit on inventions? Discuss how the inventions of these machines were designed specifically to meet a need. Use this site during a unit on engineering as you learn about how these machines are designed to accomplish a specific task. With older students, discuss the uses of the anti-mine equipment. Create a class "Construction Wiki" where all students contribute after researching specific equipment. Not comfortable with wikis? Online games CAN help students learn! Use this free site to play math games against other opponents or a computer. Learn about fractions, factors, multiples, and symmetry among others. Practice important skills using basic multiplication and have fun learning math. In order to play all games, a log in is required. However, you can do some of the activities using a "Guest Pass." Just click on the "Guest Pass" link to begin. With this option, you can't play against other players - only the computer. At the time of this review, all five interactives were available to guests. Log in to play against others in and out of your class. Registering with the site also allows you to save your game.

Specific activities include "Square Off," "Factor Dazzle," "Fraction Feud," "Times Square," and "Slam Ball". Click on the "For Parents and Educators" tab to learn more about each game and the content area being addressed.

Students can create a login to save their game play as well as challenge others in their class or elsewhere. Students must have individual accounts (email required). Check your school policies about accessing/sharing student email on school computers. You may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each group of students (by code name or number) within your classes. If your students do not have their own emails follow the Gmail subaccount directions explained here.

If using a phone, understanding calling plans and additional charges is needed. You must know how to use embed codes to place audio files within your blog, wiki, or website. No login is required! Simply click the "Get Yours It's Free" button. Choose the method to create the audio and preview and edit the file. Enter your email address to receive a link to your file. Click on the link to grab widgets. Copy the code and place in your blog or website.

The tool does not show which work is attributable to which student. You may want to require that students mark their contributions in order to get credit. Consider using a class email account set up for this purpose. Be sure students understand the appropriate use of this email account.

Classroom use: Use this service to record audio of passages used in class, homework assignments, and other written material. Young students can practice reading aloud at this site (and listen to themselves), showing improvement in fluency as the year goes on. Have students use this site in place of a traditional book report. Have cooperative learning groups create a news broadcast and share it using this site. Use this site with ESL/ELL students just learning the English language. Use this site in world language classes for students to hear and learn the pronunciations. Place the embed code in a site that students can access outside of class for review, identifying directions, and listening to text. Speech and language teachers can use this tool to record student articulation and demonstrate progress through the year.

Differentiating activities for all learners has become easier with this tool. Use this free Bloom's Taxonomy tool, created by an educator, to develop great objectives for differentiated instruction. Move through developing your goal on this site by choosing a level of Bloom's Taxonomy and a thinking skill. Then move on to your content, resources, finished product expected, and what kind of grouping you want. These are all tabs at the top of the page. Watch the sentence at the top of the screen change as you create your objective.

As an example, use a verb from Bloom' taxonomy such as "evaluate." Click on the part of the sentence at the top, in parenthesis, to enter your content such as "patterns of environmental issues." Choose the resource you want students to use, the product you want them to make, and the number of students in a group by clicking on the tabs. Example objective: Students will evaluate the patterns of environmental issues using websites to create a news report in groups of two. Save your objective by copying and pasting it into any document or online tool. The Differentiator will give you many project ideas that you may not have thought of yourself, and serves as a welcome reminder of different activities and expectations you can use in your classroom. Take a look at this site at the beginning of the school year or when creating a new unit (or project). Find new ways to differentiate for your gifted students using this creative and powerful tool. If your gifted students test out of your current math lessons, use this site to find new material to challenge their minds. This site is deceptively quick and simple, but it could be very useful when writing detailed, powerful lesson plans.

This incredible site is a database of videos on an abundance of topics! They are arranged by topic and very easy to access. The general subjects include physical science, life science, earth and space, social studies, math, English, and the human body. Each of the subjects includes 10+ topics. And each of the topics includes countless videos. You truly have to see this collection to believe it! There are lessons "ready to go" on video: Civil Rights Movement, Ice Age, Allergies, Subtracting Negative Numbers, Electricity, and MANY others.

NOTE: Although the videos are listed on this site, they actually "live" elsewhere on the Internet, so some videos may be blocked in your school (those on YouTube, for example). Always pretest to be sure the video you hope to use is accessible at school!

This site is an animated demonstration of Newton's First Law. The activity is called "Speed, Eggs and Slam!" It is packed with science facts in a humorous storyline/game format. It also offers an offline version of the demonstration that includes suggestions for a hands-on experiment. The offline portion of the site instructions also has two links that are related to the demonstration and offer a real world connection to the content. Don't miss the Teacher Page, packed with information, ideas, and downloadable activities.

Our reviewers found a glitch in the technology using Firefox on a Mac: once you start the interactive version of the experiment, clicking over to the offline version caused Firefox to "crash." Decide which version you want to use first! There is also a "kids comment" section of the site where students who have done the experiments can write what they thought about the activity.

The website would be great as an introduction to the laws of motion. It could be shown on the interactive whiteboard or projector to start an inquiry discussion on motion. The kids comment section would be useful to evaluate other's ideas and reflect on their own learning. "How To Do Research" is a great starting point for teaching even the youngest researchers how to begin. Follow Research Rocket for an educational ride through all of the steps of conducting research. Students will be guided through all phases of research starting with Planning the Project and moving their way through Search for Information, Search the Internet, Take Notes, Use the Information and finally, Share What You Know. The information is provided in a colorful and interactive manner with plenty of examples, tools and helpful hints. What a great way to walk students through a research project without leaving any questions unanswered or stones unturned.

In the Classroom

Project the site on an interactive whiteboard or projector and begin as a whole group with "Step 1- Planning the Project." Spend time reviewing each phase and proceed with assigning students research to do on their own. Reconvene to check student work, answer questions, and move on to the next step in the research project. Make sure to check out all of the great ways to share the research! Have students create multimedia research projects! The options are endless. How about creating podcasts demonstrating what they learned about their research topic. Use a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here). Have cooperative learning groups create online books using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Another idea: use a tool such as bubbl.us (reviewed here) to create and share concept maps about the research topics!

This site offers a simple math activity challenging students to figure out the "mystery number" between 1-10. Detailed audio directions are provided as you enter the site. Students click on a number and then the "monster" comes out and says if the "mystery number" is greater or less than the student's guess. The monster covers up any numbers that are not possibilities anymore. For example, if a student guesses the number 4, and the monster says the "mystery number" is less than 4, then the monster covers up numbers 4-10. This site helps students practice their logic skills as well as gain a deeper understanding of "greater" and "less than." This activity is FREE, but other activities at this site are for a fee. This site does require Adobe Shockwave. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

This site offers seven simple interactives that demonstrate various classes of Frieze patterns (patterns of symmetry). Students can experiment at this site with Glide Reflection and Rotation, Horizontal and Vertical Reflections, and Translations. Click on the small red circles to transform the figures, use the red "s" to stretch or shorten the pattern. Some of the terminology is even applicable in elementary math.

There is a link to a detailed lesson plan (including a few lesson plans, printables, and interactives). This site is aligned to national standards. The site requires both Flash and Adobe Acrobat. You can get both from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

In the Classroom

Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector during a unit about rotation and/or reflection. Have students work with partners to explore this site together. Have students create their own patterns using graph paper or a drawing program with lines of symmetry and simple "flip horizontal" or "flip vertical" commands. Take advantage of the ready to go lesson plans, printables, and more.

This interactive activity is a primary Krypto using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You will build number sense as well as computation skills. The rules are simple: combine five numbers and choose the operation in between to obtain the final "target" number. Primary Krypto uses the numbers 1-10 only. You simply "drag and drop" the numbers to the correct locations. To choose the operation, you click on the smaller boxes and the symbols (+, -, etc) appear. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. This is an excellent challenge for young gifted students. Have students work in pairs to try out these interactive puzzles. You may find them challenging each other to do more as they become addicted!

This site provides countless books, films, plays, and television shows that all relate to specific math concepts. What a fabulous way to integrate math, language arts, history, and more! The site includes the title, year, and brief description. Teachers can browse by genre, medium, motif, and/or topic. Media include everything from comic books to plays to television series. Genres include historical fiction, children's literature, adventure/espionage, fantasy, science fiction, and more. Sixty-three fiction offerings are even available FREE (in their entirety) online! The site is still developing and frequently adds additional fiction titles. Students who enjoy fantasy will also enjoy choosing books from this site, since the author admits that not all math mentioned in all the books is "real" math!! The site allows teachers to search by keyword and also to browse new offerings in the compilation of titles.

Use this site to find extra reading choices for reluctant readers who are interested in technology and math. Use it also to show students that math processes are inherent in a lot of life's experiences. Search the site for your current math topics. Share this link on your class website for students (and parents) to use at home. Share it with your school librarian for a featured reading shelf. Challenge your more verbal/linguistic gifted students to write similar stories that feature a math concept and create an online book using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here.

This site offers an eclectic mix of topics (and interactives) divided up by age level. All ages include science, math, language arts, music, art, and more! Ages 5-7 will enjoy Nash's Adventures: spelling, counting, sinking and floating interactives, and more. For ages 7-9, there is Flick's Adventure. This exciting "adventure" includes several interactives, many revolving around "adventures" (through a haunted house, riding a roller coaster, and walking up a mountain). Sprat's Adventures offers interactives and more for ages 9 to 11. The activities takes students virtually to a museum, a circus, and outer space! In addition to the numerous interactive activities, there are also printable pages, comics, songs, e-cards, and more. Attention Teachers - there is a link with lesson plans, printable pages, lesson ideas, and more available if you click on Home and then Teachers . Be aware, since this site was created by the BBC, you may notice some slight spelling and language differences. Nearly all of these activities require Flash. This site can easily be differentiated using the specific age ranges provided. Use this site to differentiate for your special education, ESL, or ELL students.

Be sure to visit the Teachers Link for some excellent ideas. All of the activities are perfect for learning stations, individual computers, or on an interactive whiteboard or projection screen. The offerings available are so diverse, that this website could be used throughout several language arts, math, science, art, and music lessons. Feature this website in your class newsletter or on your website so students can practice these educational activities at home.
