The Mariner's Museum in Newport News, Va. offers this very complete site on the origins of the West African slave trade. While its extensive text is densely written, good organization makes the information manageable, and the illustrations are extensive enough to provide some visual interest. Depending on their level of interest, middle or high school students should be able to handle this one effectively. Teachers will want to explore the various activities and the slavery quiz.

In the Classroom

Use this site as an introductory activity during a unit on the Middle Passage and the African Slave trade. Have students explore the site in cooperative learning groups OR individually on classroom computers. Because of the large amount of content on the site, we recommend creating a guide or graphic organizer to lead students through the exhibit. For help with graphic organizers, try Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

For an interesting lesson idea, start with this presentation on the creation and use of Ghanian Kente cloth, used in African festivals and ceremonies. This site from the Smithsonian shows how the cloth is made and describes the various ways in which Africans use it. The content is adaptable to many age levels.

In the Classroom

Use this activity here in your own classroom during a unit on African culture. Open the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector to guide the classroom on how and when to wear Kente cloth. Students can do this with their own cloth, just so long as they are still grasping the significance of the real thing. This would be a fun activity during a class period that's devoted to presentations & the like.

The BBC's presentation of African history works forward from about 200 AD, examining cultures of various African regions and the influences of Islam, colonialism, and the like. There are extensive subdivisions, each with its own presentation, images, timeline, and resources. There's a wealth of information here for any study of Africa and its history.

Use this site to add something tangible to the study of Africa. While there is an abundance of informational text, what is really great about this site are the audio files embedded with in each section. There are files of African music, professors talking, geologists, politicians, etc - all exhibiting the importance of African per historical era. The site dates back to the birth of mankind and precedes through the present day, so use this site in every time period of a world history class!

Here's a South African site that offers images and camera feeds from a variety of wildlife parks and refuges in Africa. There's no way to know exactly what you'll find, and the speed of your connection will certainly affect the performance, but you can find great images here.

tag(s): africa (180), webcams (6)

In the Classroom

This is an excellent site to supplement a unit on Africa specifically, or one that is focused on different environments over the world. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students look at in pairs or cooperative learning groups. Use the site to show kids how different the African country-side is from their own. Because one can not predict when or where animals will appear, it is probably best to have students check periodically through the day or classroom period. Have students observe the camera-view, and write a comparative piece on the differences between the region shown and their own. Post pictures of the site and students work to display around the classroom during the unit!
