In the Classroom

Use this site as a tool to helping students understand the historical context of events, and as an activator to new units. Simply type in the year being studied to access a summary article of the big events that happened. The articles are mostly western-centric, but for an American or European history class it is still a useful tool.

This Canadian site is written expressly for younger audiences, yet the thematic presentation is interesting enough to hold the attention of older students. There's lots of information, presented in an appealing, easily accessible structure. Great addition to any unit on exploration, or for the study of Canadian history itself.

Choose tabs to follow the story of the refugees from "We Had to Leave" through "New Lives." In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans included on this site as part of any World War II unit. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Have each group become "experts" about different sections then teach their portion to their classmates. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Easel.ly, reviewed here, or Venngage, reviewed here. Have students create maps using Animaps, reviewed here. With Animaps students can add text, images, and locations of different points of refuge for those fleeing the Holocaust.

Find resources related to John F Kennedy: facts, links to several speeches, and a multimedia gallery. One interesting part of this site is the use of word clouds as part of the page with the links to speeches. Each speech includes a published transcript of the text of the speech along with a word cloud emphasizing the most frequently used words. This is part of a larger collection of all the United States presidents but provides a nice starting point for important events and information related to our 35th president.

In the Classroom

View video clips with your class on your interactive whiteboard. Share a link with students for use on any project relating to United States presidents or John F Kennedy. Have students choose one speech and create a simple infographic sharing their findings about its themes using Easel.ly, reviewed here or Venngage reviewed here.

Find news videos from around the world in a unique way. Mapeas video links are located on a Google Map. Go to the specific geographical area of the world you want and click on the links. Larger dots contain more videos in that area. There are dots that indicate a news story in business, entertainment, or general. Continue to click on the dots until there are actual videos to choose from. Stay informed with current events around the world with this site.

In the Classroom

Use this site to find events occurring around the world. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Research about many of these events to understand the history, culture, and background of the problem or event. Research other such events that may have occurred elsewhere in the world. Report findings using a blog, wiki, or through class discussion. Not comfortable with wikis? Have no wiki worries - check out the TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. Challenge students to find their own news stories and create a short multimedia project highlighting "the news" by creating a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced) to explain their news story that they researched. Use a site such as Blabberize (reviewed here).
