Here's one for the armchair adventurers. This site offers an interactive trek to the summit of Mount Everest. Along the way, it explains the culture of Nepal and the Himalaya region, and the impact that increasing numbers of western climbers have had on that culture. The tour is available in both html and Shockwave versions; the Shockwave tour requires a fast connection and lots of memory, but it's worth the wait.

tag(s): field trips (12), mountains (13), virtual field trips (48)

In the Classroom

Use the interactive tour as a learning center or station during a unit on the Himalayas. To assess student learning, have students use a mapping tool such as Mapskip (reviewed here) to create a map of local landforms (with audio stories and pictures included) - allowing them to recreate their own hike.

This site offers historical, cultural, political, and travel information about Malaysia. The reading level may be a bit high for some middle schoolers, but the site could be a great source of research information for studies of other cultures and peoples.

In the Classroom

Use the historic timeline to study the spread of Islam to Malaysia and the rest of South East Asia during the 15th century. The timeline is extremely detailed and can actually be used as a learning center or station too. To help guide students through the content, we recommend creating a graphic organizer. For help making those, try Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

This site offers a thorough and graphically well-designed introduction to the history, cultures, and 20th century politics of India and its neighbors. While a bit text-heavy, visuals support most of the sections, and the content could be useful for research projects or general information. The site includes a short biography of Mahatma Ghandi. This is a "labor of love" site created by two faculty members at UCLA.

This is an elegant Indian site describing archeological excavations at the site of Lothal, an ancient city on the Indus river. There are interactive maps, descriptions of life in the ancient city, and a catalog of artifacts found during the excavations. Beautiful quality, and a little slow as a result, but if you're looking for examples of how archaeologists work, it's worth the wait.

tag(s): archeology (32), india (36)

In the Classroom

Use the images in this site to create a visual discovery activity during a unit on the Indus River Valley. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them in a Powerpoint presentation to be displayed over the interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow the class to view the images for 30-45 seconds each, writing down what they observe, infer and predict about each image. After all the images have been seen, start a class discussion based on student's findings. This is a great way to review material, as it allows students to apply classroom knowledge.

This site offers a wonderful list of Twitter feeds to consider if you are just starting out or if you are adding to your feed related to history. The list includes the Twitter name with a link and a short description. Feeds include the Library of Congress, quotes and sayings from Thomas Jefferson, and HistoryDay (see what happened on this day in history). Feeds are separated into categories such as media, educators and students, and military to help navigate the different types.

Create a classroom twitter account and choose feeds to follow that relate to classroom studies. Assign different students to follow the feed each week to summarize and review. Challenge students to find other history Twitter feeds to follow. Have students create a Twitter account as a historical figure as part of research projects. Find news videos from around the world in a unique way. Mapeas video links are located on a Google Map. Go to the specific geographical area of the world you want and click on the links. Larger dots contain more videos in that area. There are dots that indicate a news story in business, entertainment, or general. Continue to click on the dots until there are actual videos to choose from. Stay informed with current events around the world with this site.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Use this site to find events occurring around the world. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Research about many of these events to understand the history, culture, and background of the problem or event. Research other such events that may have occurred elsewhere in the world. Report findings using a blog, wiki, or through class discussion. Not comfortable with wikis? Have no wiki worries - check out the TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. Challenge students to find their own news stories and create a short multimedia project highlighting "the news" by creating a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced) to explain their news story that they researched. Use a site such as Blabberize (reviewed here).
