Use for your own background research or as a resource for your students. Created by the New York Public Library.

In the Classroom

Use this site to search for images that can be used in your classroom for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them on separate slides of a PowerPoint show. Show each slide to the class for 1-2 minutes each, allowing students time to jot down what they observe, predict and infer about each image. After the class has finished with the slides, have a class discussion based on the notes that students took accompanying a replaying of the slide show. This is a great way to introduce or review a topic in a non-lecture format.

Here's an on-line resource from Duke University offering drop-down instructions for citing more than a dozen different types of sources. It's the closest we've found to one-stop shopping for research citation help.

NoodleTools offers several different tools to aid with research. NoodleTools Express creates reference citations using MLA, APA, and Chicago/Turabian forms. Choose a format style from different citation type options such as newspaper, website, or book. Enter information into the template provided. Copy and paste the citation into your project or word document. NoodleTools MLA Lite contains limited citation options for elementary or middle school students. Account creation is necessary for this option requiring a user name and password. Citations created will be stored in your account for future reference. NoodleQuest narrows down and defines research topics. Use check boxes to indicate needs such as type of results desired (expert, primary sources, etc.), timeliness of information required, and media requirements. Your choices define the best search strategies for your topic along with suggestions for getting started. Be sure to also check out the extensive Teacher's Resources found on NoodleTools. This area contains links to many different research and literacy tools. One item of interest to many is found in the 21st Century Literacies portion. Find the Information Literacy portion then select "Choose the Best Search Engine for Your Information Need." Here you will find a list of search engines that are best for different types of searches such as finding background, searching controversial topics, and finding quality results. Other items in NoodleTools include a Curriculum Collaboration Toolkit and The Ethical Researcher (Tools for Teaching Academic Integrity.)
