In the ClassroomMake coding part of science inquiry or math logic in any classroom. Include it as part of scientific method or discussions about careers in science. You may even want to portray coding as just another "world language" in today's world. Be sure to look at all the implementation advice before introducing these extensive coding resources to your class. It would be wise to complete the Hour of Code yourself so you will feel comfortable helping students if they get stuck. Better yet, invite a few students to do an hour with you after school and learn together! You will have a team of "techsperts" to help their peers. Select the Learn button from the top menu to find two links for educators. The one at the top of the Learn page gives quick tips for prepping for the Hour of Code. The one at the bottom of the slide gives complete instructions for implementing the Hour of Code in your classroom. Plan an hour of Code on nationally designated days or on your own calendar! Invite the PTA/PTO to host a coding event. Select a video to use to introduce Computer Science to your students. In a 1:1 or BYOD classroom, guide students through the site using Surfly, a tool to share the web pages with others, reviewed here. If you only have a few computers, introduce this tool using a projector or interactive whiteboard and bookmark it as a learning station with earbuds/headphones. Encourage students to help each other when they have difficulty. Share this on your website for students to use at home, too. Anybody Can Learn Code teaches the basics. Those students who show a keen interest in coding could learn more by using a program such as Codeacademy, reviewed here.
Grades5 to 12
In the ClassroomHave students set up collaborative groups for projects, lab data, and more. Anything students can do on a single computer they can do collaboratively with this tool, accessing work from any computer that can access the Internet. Be sure to test out this tool before using with your class. Set up a class account and instruct small revision groups to exchange email addresses. Students can then send the rough draft via email to their revising group. The group members would respond to the email and click on anonymous to make suggestions. This allows the writer to know who is making the revisions without the editor having to make an account. It may be a good idea to set up the groups with the teacher as a "member." Have students work from home for group projects. Make sure to protect the safety of student work and identity. Check your school's Acceptable Use Policy.
Create an innovative, exciting revision experience for students to suggest changes to each others' writing and instantly engage in the peer review process by using Poetica. This tool facilitates teacher comments on student essays by not having to wait until students turn in their papers. Have them share links with you to their works in progress. Check essays online, monitor progress, and even make suggestions for revisions to provide feedback along the way and drive successful evidence support, proofreading, and editing skills. Challenge gifted students on their drafts and push their thinking further, adding questions or responses. Since most of us do not have time to consistently provide such individual challenge throughout the writing process, why not connect them with other gifted students to collaborate and debate beyond just your classroom? Obviously, this tool is also fabulous for collaboration among students or teachers creating a shared writing piece at any level. You could even use it for parent input into draft IEPs.

In the ClassroomUse this tool any time that photos need to be edited for use on class blogs, wikis, or sites. In primary grades, use this tool to edit pictures from a field trip, science experiments, and more. Edit images you want to use in drag and drop sorting activities on your interactive whiteboard, such as food groups. Share the editing process with your younger students using your interactive whiteboard or projector. Edit a photo project together! Encourage older students to use this tool themselves to remove distracting backgrounds from images for projects or presentations. Language and special ed teachers will love being able to create uncluttered images to use in vocabulary activities.

In the ClassroomUse Live as an alternative to other screen sharing tools to maintain quality when discussing images. Use it with your 1:1 art class to discuss design principles and techniques in images or works of art. Suggest students use Live when collaborating on group art or media projects. Students can create or alter group products such as logos for their mock companies or political party. World language classes can use an image to spark conversation and vocabulary practice using this online tool, even if they are not in the same location! Set up a LIVE session with a partner class at another school for sharing images and the stories behind them. Share an image of a student's work using a Live session during a parent phone conference.

Introduce one of the WebRangers' multimedia resources to your class on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students sign up with a pseudonym; no email address is required. Use the Question of the Week during writing time, and have students share their response with a partner. Use the historic portions to accompany the study of US history or even in geography. Use this site as a precursor activity to an actual trip to one of the parks or as you study states and their major landmarks. Use this in science class as you study animals and habitats. Be sure to share this site with parents for use at home too! In addition to defining the word or phrase, the dictionary has click-able audio recordings to hear how the word is pronounced in North American and British English. This site could be very useful for ESL/ELL students. Talk with your district technology department about including the adult filter as part of the security settings on servers. Any settings you "save" will only save on the computer being used.

Use it in world language class for students to practice oral language and pronunciation as they send cards to each other. Create audio postcards as a thank you to school staff or a simple gift for Mothers or Fathers Day. Make postcards to announce events in the school library or sponsored by school clubs.

Challenge students to find a topic about which they know nothing (or barely anything). This site will give them experience reading informational text on a topic they wonder about. Partner weaker readers with others who may be able to help them read the text-heavier articles. Have students read and research individually or in small groups taking notes using a simple graphic organizer from 25 Language Arts Graphic Organizers, reviewed here. Use this opportunity to teach summarizing, and citing sources. Cool Kid Facts is a great tool to build background knowledge about all sorts of topics!

In the ClassroomInvite parents and students as you create albums of specific events such as field trips, service projects, hands-on activities, field experiences, class speakers, and more. Anywhere photos can be used to showcase achievement, this service would be a great resource. Use for any project, class explanation of concepts, experiments, or demonstrations. Resource teachers, speech teachers, or world language teachers can collect images into "albums" for students to practice/develop speech and vocabulary. In science class when having students do insect collections, instead of having them collect the actual specimens, have them take pictures using their phones or digital cameras. Have the students upload to the album at home, and then they can create a multimedia project with the pictures and statistics of the specimen. Students can snap a picture anywhere, with any device, and upload to the web to use in class or cooperative groups. This tool would be great for clubs and performance groups as well! Do you send a newsletter home to parents? Try creating a heading made from a collage of your latest class activity. Use a program such as Mosaic Maker, reviewed here, to create a collage. Though the content is private, monitor student photos and comments as nothing would be prohibited by Homeroom. You will be notified of all new content.

In the ClassroomDemonstrate how to use widgets using a projector or interactive whiteboard with your students. Use these activities for center time, indoor recess, or as rewards for students. Add widgets to your class website or wiki throughout the year. Get help with embedding almost anything into your website from this informative blog, reviewed here. Challenge students to complete activities then journal and share their experience. Have students use Ourboox, reviewed here, to create a beautiful, page-flipping digital book in minutes, and they can embed the book alongside the games on a class wiki.

In the ClassroomUse Easyclass to manage and organize any classroom. Maintain a classroom calendar so students can easily find due dates and deadlines for homework and projects. Share information with parents to keep them up to date. Use the discussion feature as a resource for keeping students involved over long holidays or on a snow day. EasyClass is an interactive and collaborative program; have literature circles complete write ups, discussions, and final presentations about the book they read using EasyClass. Lab partners can present their findings, and math students can demonstrate how they solved a problem.

Share the locations using Google Earth (reviewed here). Challenge your students to choose novels from several different locations to compare and discuss the role of setting in the themes of the novels.

In the ClassroomTeachers sign up for the full program using their email, and then set up student accounts. The quickest way to understand and get started with SportsNetwork 2 is to click on the video. View the Teacher and Student Resources link in the middle of the page. Use the ten minute demo to introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students complete this 20-hour learning game on their own in class or as homework, too. Students print out reports to show completion of each section. The text portions might be challenging for ESL/ELL students or struggling readers. Pair weaker readers with strong readers as necessary. Completion of the activity could be scheduled by giving each student time on the class computers or scheduling the computer lab several days a week for part of the period.
