This site offers a growing bank of resources for elementary teachers to use with interactive whiteboards or projectors. If you don't have a whiteboard, files can be opened on computers for individual use. Files include Excel, Flash, PowerPoint, Word and other formats to download. Use the links at the top of the page to find the appropriate grade range beginning with preschool (foundation) through KS3 (roughly equivalent to middle school). Within each grade level are resources divided by topic such as mathematics, literacy or science. Be sure to check out the "Amusements" section as it isn't just for fun; this category includes activities such as jumbled words and memory games. Sign up for the free mailing list to be notified when new activities are added. You can also add your own resources to the site for others to use. While testing this site, the editor noticed a few of the links either take extremely long to open or don't work at all. However, we still felt this was a great find, since nearly everything else worked perfectly.

Here's every parent or teacher's dream: a site that helps you make your own puzzles, word games, and math puzzlers. There is a selection of almost a dozen different formats, each of which can be customized to meet your specific needs. Choose the puzzle type you want from the drop-down menu. Both adults and learners can create games!

tag(s): crosswords (18), puzzles (208)

In the Classroom

Create your puzzles by following the simple directions. These can be used both online and in print form. You or your students can create games for use on an interactive whiteboard (students highlight the answers in different colors). Have students create their own to challenge classmates! If you have kinesthetic learners or those with weak fine motor skills who have trouble with pencils, the whiteboard is a real help. Make it a center. Build a class collection of student-made games and puzzles for use over and over. Tip: If you take a screenshot of a word search or print it to a pdf, you can save it electronically. Screenshots: Prtscrn key on a Windows machine, then PASTE into a document; Command+shift+4 on a Mac; press both buttons at once on an iPad to save a screenshot to the camera roll.

This site provides a good way to practice vocabulary words. Knoword is a vocabulary game that requires you to think quickly on your feet. You will be given one randomly generated dictionary definition along with the first letter of its corresponding word. The object of the game is to fill in the rest of the word. The faster you guess the word the more points and time you'll receive. Don't know the word? Just hit the skip button and a new definition will appear. You can create an account if you want to save your scores. Creating an account does require an email address. Note that you can change which English spellings used (U.S. or Canada/Britain) by clicking the small flag at top right. The speed and variety of words builds general verbal accuity and flexible thinking along with specific vocabulary.

tag(s): test prep (96), vocabulary (324)

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Put this on classroom computers or on a whiteboard at the side of the classroom for students to use as a center. This game would be great for students preparing to take SATs. Another activity is to have a team competition. Divide your class into three or four groups and give each group a laptop. Have them work together to see how many words they can type. Before you begin be sure that you change the language to English US because it defaults to English Canada/Britain. Have a team tournament for high scores throughout the year. Gifted students -- even very young ones-- will love this challenge.

Tip: rather than using your personal or work email, create a free Gmail account to use for memberships (if you decide to register). If you plan to have students register individually, you may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each group of students (by code name or number) within your classes. Here is a blog post that tells how to set up GMail subaccounts to use for any online membership service.

This site offers practice with math and challenging problems for all grade levels. If you teach math to grades 1-12, this site is a MUST SEE. It contains a graduated set of over 1,000 problems starting from very easy and working up to very difficult levels. Each problem contains a short description and an image to help visualize the problem. Problems adapt to the skill of the person answering problems, grade levels cannot be increased until 5 correct problems in a row have been solved. The tests concentrate on understanding, spatial reasoning, and problem solving rather than math rules and theorems.
