Though this site has been archived, all of the links to lesson plans, etc. are working. Learn the terminology, background, and teaching how-to's for informal or "non-traditional" gymnastcs from this site. You will find numerous activity and lesson ideas, complete descriptions of the skills (including cues, problem areas, tips, spotting, and variations), and even video of some skills to share with your students (Requires Quicktime). Lesson ideas come from educators who submit them, so the list keeps growing.

Give a link to the skills portion of the site on your teacher web page so students and parents can practice at home after you have given the instruction in class. Discourage couch-potatoes! This site would also be useful fot students who cannot participate in gym to learn background information while they sit out.

Get them moving! Create walk/run paths for your students to use both in school PE classes and at home using this interactive site from United States Track and Field. Follow simple instructions to use a clickable map as you designate the route. The site calculates the mileage, lets you print out the map with the route marked, or even add it to an online database of walk/run routes all over the U.S. Then place links to your recommended routes on your teacher or school web site. Get students and parents involved in fitness with their families. You can also look up routes in your area already registered by other fitness enthusiasts. Maybe even create an all-school walk/run event!

Though not designed specifically for students, the site includes complete resources - recipes, promotional ideas, local contact information, etc. - and could be useful for health and nutrition classes.

This site was developed for the 1996 Atlanta games, and updated in 2013. It offers some timeless information about the science behind the sports that is useful during any Olympic year! The WhyFiles presentation shows the hundreds of scientific connections to modern sports. There are eight main categories (for example, Ancient Olympics, Computers In Sports, and Sports Doctors: Athletic Ethics). Although this site isn't highly interactive, there are some explicitly detailed photographs and extensive information on all topics highlighted.

In the Classroom

Why not do an eight day unit based on this website. Highlight a new category each day on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Or divide your students into small groups and assign each group one of the eight topics to explore. This site would tie into social studies, health, physical education, technology, and other subject areas.
