This comprehensive site includes lesson pans, interactive review tools, and online activities for every aspect of teaching cell biology to middle grades. There are complete teacher ages, concept maps, and even a Cells Are Us bingo game for review. You must log in (as a guest) to see the teacher pages. Some content may be useful even in a high school biology class.

Some of the interactives would make good interactive whiteboard or partner-shared review games. The entire site should be a link from your teacher web page for students to use in at-home review.

Research verifies the power of graphic organizers in promoting strong thinking skills and comprehension for all ages. Gliffy is a FREE online tool for creating graphic organizers without purchasing ANY software. The free use is limited to students with an educational email account. You can export the graphic organizers to a blog or "publish" them on the web -- all for free.

tag(s): graphic organizers (39)

In the Classroom

Play with the tools and toolbars to create diagrams, access help and FAQ to collaborate, publish, or embed diagrams in your blog or other web page. Collaborators need individual email accounts to gain access.

Assign students to "map" out a chapter or story or assign groups to create study guides using this tool collaboratively. Create a whole-class concept map from a brainstorm to determine prior knowledge at the start of a unit. Then have students add to it throughout the unit. Your students are certain to enjoy this tool and be forced to THINK in the process. This would also be a great tool for group projects in YOUR grad classes!

Allow groups of students to create card sets for the class to study for tests (using your free account). With just one classroom computer, you can allow students to take turns practicing with the card set. Have a contest or rotate the chance to make the study cards for each quiz or test. This will build study skills for all. If you haev access to an interactive whiteboard, have students do a review session using your student-made or another premade card set on the board.

Students will love using the computer to create and save flash cards! Show your students how to use the site on a projector the first time, then have them create their own flash card sets or sets for their classmates as part of review for unit tests. Use YOUR user account for student safety. Be sure to search for card already made, but remember that others COULD have errors. Always pre-check before letting students use someone else's set.

Use this site to help students review for the AP exam - although teachers not in an AP course could also use these free quizzes for the SOL's or other end of the year assessments. Save the site to your teacher web page to allow students to access it both in and out of the classroom. While they are a little hokey looking, the information is effective and of good quality. Teachers can have students take the practice quizzes in or out of the classroom to assess what subjects need the most review before their end assessment.
