The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks - Google Arts & Culture
Grades
4 to 12tag(s): alaska (20), florida (10), hawaii (7), landforms (38), national parks (27), states (122), utah (2), video (257), virtual field trips (80)
In the Classroom
Share this beautiful site and images on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector, then have students explore on their own. This site can be included with many different geography units to teach landforms found around the United States. Use as a starting point to learn more about our National Parks and Parks Service. Enhance learning by having students create an annotated image of other interesting geographic locations using a tool such as Google Drawings, reviewed here. Google Drawings allows you to annotate an image with links to videos, text, websites, and more. Not familiar with Google Drawings? Watch an archived OK2Ask session to learn how to use: OK2Ask Google Drawings, here. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos using FlexClip, reviewed here, of behind the scenes information from your hometown, then share them on a site such as TeacherTube, reviewed here. You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Map Stack - Stamen Design
Grades
3 to 12In the Classroom
Use Map Stack to focus on and compare resources found in various communities or geographic locations. Identify where natural resources are concentrated in the world. Compare street design in different communities, the concentration of population, and more. Have students use a Map Stack image with multimedia projects for many different topics such as communities, locations of battles, or historic events. Use these maps on your interactive whiteboard as you teach about any location, using the whiteboard pens and highlighters to have students indicate landforms, places, and more on the maps.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

CurriConnects Book List: Alaska and Hawaii - TeachersFirst
Grades
K to 12tag(s): alaska (20), book lists (161), hawaii (7), independent reading (85)
In the Classroom
Include these books for independent reading during a unit on U.S. geography, multiculturalism, or the states. Compare the life of children living in Alaska or Hawaii to the students in your own class. The conversations will easily evolve into projects where students can compare and contrast or create "profiles" of childhood in different states and cultures.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Google Maps - Google
Grades
1 to 12tag(s): DAT device agnostic tool (143), directions (12), maps (209)
In the Classroom
If you teach geography, this one's a must. It is also helpful for showing students WHERE a story or news event takes place. In lower grades, use it to show students basics of their community. Teach map skills by showing students their own community. Zoom in on their street or on the school. This site and its more sophisticated cousin, Google Earth, are great on an interactive whiteboard. Set up a class Google account (or use student accounts if permitted). Have students create their own custom route plans to tour historic sites. Challenge math students to plan the most economical route to visit several vacation destinations, including gas mileage and gas prices. Have students create placemarker files of the important places in the life of a famous person or the route traveled by a particular unit during the Civil War. Have student groups create placemarker files to show environmental sites, habitats, landforms, or anything you can place on a map. Embed projects in a class wiki using the handy embed code offered as a sharing option. Not comfortable with wikis? The 50 States - TeachersFirst
Grades
4 to 8tag(s): california (16), new york (22), states (122), texas (7)
In the Classroom
Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of the 50 states. One easy use would be for testing students on knowledge of the capitals. Open the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector, and you can test students not only by state recognition on the map but with what the capitals are. State location and capitol information are not clearly stated until clicked on, so this would be a fairly easy formative assessment in review the information.Comments

Make the Dirt Fly - Smithsonian Institution
Grades
6 to 12tag(s): south america (36)
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector before allowing students to explore it on their own. Have students go through the exhibit in pairs or cooperative learning groups on classroom computers to learn about the Panama Canal in a non-lecture format. This would be a useful site in a US history course, particularly for the upper reading levels. Challenge students to find an image for the most interesting facts they learned about the Panama Canal project. Then, have students create an annotated, narrated image, including text boxes and related links, using a tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here, about the facts behind the image they chose.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
