In the Classroom
The change in seasons is a difficult concept for students to understand. Use this interactive tool to show the sun's position at various times of the year and how the sunrise and sunset times change. This is terrific to share on an interactive whiteboard or projector, then have elementary (or even middle school) students "act out" the roles of sun. moon, and earth by moving about the room. Turn down the music to avoid distraction. Show how sunrise and sunset are also different at various points on the globe. Allow students the opportunity to play with the tool first and ask them what they notice and what questions they have. Inquire together to understand the various concepts. Share on an interactive whiteboard or projector with a student emcee to run the inquiry. Use these resources as a pre-unit activity to ecology or climate change. Brainstorm the issues presented as a class. Ask students what they already know about these problems. This is a great opportunity to provide time for student writing either in a conventional journal or on a blog. Allow time for students to generate questions about what they do not understand and plan the unit based upon these questions. Consider telling your own stories from your own area which can easily be published on a wiki, blog, or site. Use older relatives and community members that can discuss changes in weather, hunting, etc. in your area. Find records from past newspapers that help paint a picture of how our seasons and activities have changed over the year. Besides the basic activity, quite a few of the monthly offerings include downloadable books to print and use, original song lyrics, and links to other related websites. This site is great to use with young ESL/ELL students too who need lots of fun reinforcement with learning the alphabet and pre-reading skills. This site includes many math activities as well.

In the Classroom
Use the resources on this site to learn about the climate record locked in the polar region and understand its vulnerability to any climate change. Identify changes being seen there and in your own area. Be sure to discuss the difference between climate and weather as this is often misunderstood. As climate change is global, it is often a difficult concept to grasp. Use the data and projects to identify the global nature of the phenomena in order to allow students to identify the far reaching implications. Identify any climate change in you area. Consider having students poll their family members from young to old. Many (especially older members) will remember seasons vastly different from what they see today. Sensitize students to the possibilities in order to identify changes (even considered minor) and how everyone can make changes to reduce their carbon footprint. Many of the choices that students make have other benefits (such as saving money, etc.) as well as impacting the global climate change. Consider having students create stories, poems, and editorials as well as posters and conventional or multimedia campaigns to express their knowledge. Use an online poster creator, such as Padlet (reviewed here). Be sure to note the use of material on this site as it requires an email for permission to use. This very simple tool allows you to show how the earth's rotation affects daylight. By viewing different time zones, latitude, and longitude you can see where it is day and night. The site does allow you to zoom in slightly, but not too close. There are many "custom" viewing options for current cloud cover, IR imagery, and much more.

This tool is great for all levels. Use this as part of a science, social studies or geography lesson. Put this site up on your interactive whiteboard or projector. When using this with young students, use the zoom feature and zoom into different areas of the world to show them day and night. What a great way to teach about opposites. When using with older students show them how to find locations using the latitude and longitude feature. This site shows carbon dioxide emissions across the U.S. One graph shows the differences in CO2 emissions in different seasons. Another has a list and graph of the top emitting counties across the U.S. A YouTube video liked from the site explains the project, discusses its parameters and results, and displays maps of the U.S. which show different types of noxious sources on a very close-up scale. Vulcan project scientists plan to do similar mapping for Mexico and Canada. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Use the video and data graphics when studying the effect of man-made energy burners on the ecosystem. Share the video on a projector or interactive whiteboard. This mini-lesson plan teaches children sequence, observation, season awareness, and creative expression. The children either make multiple drawings or cards which capture the outdoor scene of the present season. They also put the cards or drawings in sequential order. Children who can't write can dictate their comments to the teacher. As the children share their sequential stories with each other, they all practice listening skills, learn new vocabulary, and understand differences in points of view. Children can also take their classmates' pictures and cards and rearrange them and tell or write new stories.

Teach about the earth and seasonal change as you solve a real mystery. This unique international "hide and seek" activity is interactive, easy to use, and free! The challenge begins the last week of January and continues throughout May. Each week, students are given a clue to try to locate a "Mystery Class" from somewhere around the world. All clues are seasonal and some include sunrise and sunset times. The site includes standards in science, math and geography. The site provides lesson plans, interactive activities, video clips and more. Registration is free for this 11-week adventure or you can use the resources at the website with no registration necessary. Flash is required for a very few of the activities, there is a lot of information to learn.

Satisfy your interest in the weather with Tree House Weather for Kids. Designed for students in grades 5-8, this site covers Seasons, Air Pressure, Clouds, and Rock and Roll Weather (types of storms, of course!). Leave the sound on to have text read as you proceed through each section, or turn off sound to read independently. Explore the small activity section containing quick practice activities for identifying clouds, weather forecasting, and exploring the distance to the sun. Another activity contains weather comics with a template for creating your own weather comic. Be sure to check out the Teacher's Guide for many additional resources and teaching ideas. Your Spanish-speaking students will also benefit from this site, simply click the "Espanol" link near the bottom of the page to view in Spanish. At the time this review was last updated, two of the activities were not working, however all of the content remained on the site.

Search the site to find the appropriate lesson tools, and bring them up on an interactive whiteboard or projector. A lot of the activities can be used for a class activity, or you could also break students up into cooperative learning groups and have them complete them seperately.
