Besides identifying trees, users learn about forest ground layers, enrich their vocabulary, study tree anatomy and health, and hone their searching skills. When users are looking for the name of tree by looking at its leaf, this website will identify the leaf and then lead to so much more information! People who want to learn how to take care of trees learn about soils, types of land, and even how to plant (video included)!

In the Classroom

A good reference resource for outdoor outings involving leaf collecting or as a reference site during your botany unit. There are portions of the site where items and memberships are for sale, so preview and alert your students to avoid these areas.

Plants with very fast growing cycles can be very useful in classroom demonstrations and lab activities. This site from the University of Wisconsin explains how to use these "fast plants" and offers a significant collection of lessons and resource ideas involving them. There are also collections of pointers for students and teachers. This site may be just the thing for teachers who have limited outdoor resources or whose climates aren't in sync with their curricula.

This regional science museum has collected several sets of lesson ideas, examples, and submissions by students and teachers. The site also includes information on how to create simple experiments using commonly available equipment. There are a number of idea starters, but you'll need to fill in the details to make the lessons work in your classroom.

In the Classroom

This site could not be any more perfect for a learning center or station. There are quite a few digital "labs" available on the site, pick the corresponding one for your unit and save it as a favorite on your desktop. Allow students to explore the site in pairs. The section of the site entitled "simply Science" offers some free activity ideas for in the home or in the classroom activities that would add some variety to any science unit. Note: a lot of the outdoor activities are geared towards those cold Minnesota winters, so if you're in a warmer area they may be less usable.

It details the greater good of respecting the outdoors and plant life with pictures of neighborhoods. It depicts gardening as a learning experience and hobby to cope with stresses of living in our world today! It also includes outstanding links to book lists and horticulture.
