This site has embedded videos from over 1600 documentaries located all over the internet. These videos are not necessarily "short" clips. Some are longer than 15 minutes. Search the videos via several methods: browse the library, most popular, recent videos, or by categories. The categories vary greatly and include the bullying of those with disabilities, 9/11, aftermath of the Japan Tsunami, import and export of oil, and countless other topics. Each video comes with a short explanation and ratings (out of 10 stars). Viewers can also leave their own rating. Many include suggestions for related videos. Be aware: some of topics may not be suitable for the classroom. Please preview before (or IF) you choose to allow students to peruse on their own. You may want to share only specific videos with the class. It has been noted that this website opens rather slowly at the busy times of the day. But it is WELL worth the wait. Note that videos are recommended for inclusion by the video creators, so there could be very strong bias in documentary presentations. What better way to challenge students to stop and ask, "What is the source of this information and can I trust it fully?"

Explore the amazing world of Science through experiments, interactives, projects, videos, and much more on this comprehensive guide to science for kids. The site can be explored in several ways - choose links at the top of the site for experiments, projects, or other activities. Specific topics such as animals, sound, or space can be found through links at the bottom of the home page. Experiments include lists of items needed, directions, and an explanation of the science involved. Educational games include matching and sorting activities to explore living things, physical processes, and states of matter. There are also images for science, free and available for use in projects. Some activities may require Flash, and the videos are not working, however, there is so much more to see and do at this site that it is worth the time for you and your students to explore.

Beyond teaching about biology and health, this can also help students understand some of the problems with being disabled, especially disabled people who have lost limbs in the armed services or through tragic accidents. While teaching science concepts or health topics, students are developing a greater awareness and appreciation for differences in people.

In the Classroom
Try using this lesson plan as part of a health unit on accidents and amputations. Or, in biology class talk about the mechanics of the muscles in the leg and the advances that medicine has taken to help create better prosthetic devices. Link scientific inquiry to "real" problems. Consider inviting a guest who works with amputees to meet with your class via Skype as part of this lesson.This would also make a great extension activity for those students who love science and work well independently. Gifted students would enjoy the challenges of this very complete lesson package. If your school participates in a science fair, this would be an ideal project. Thinking about an after school science club? This would be a perfect activity to engage both male and female middle schoolers.

Find most of the relevant topics by using the search bar. Choose from many subjects such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, math, sociology, world languages, and written communication, among others. Gifted students or those who learn well independently can study Chinese and other topics not easily available in their school using WISC-Onkine.

In the Classroom
This would be an excellent resource for an environmental science class. Add to online course sites as an alternative to textbooks. Create assignments where students are directed to this site to read for understanding of the topics that are being discussed. For students in more advanced environmental studies, the section on Policy and Legislation is great. It is far more understandable than reading through the actual laws and policies. Have students read the website information on a specific policy or law, and then have the students find the actual law to "check up" on the site. This will encourage students to make comparisons between the reading that they could easily understand and the more complicated language of the actual laws. This simple exercise could be incorporated in an English or reading comprehension classroom or a science classroom (what a great way to do a little cross curricular teaching!). Students will learn to read more analytically in the process!

Find great high school science activities and resources for students with this interesting site. Visit the "Dissection Lab" for pictures of often dissected animals and others of interest (for example sheep brain.) Check out the games which are actually more like quizzes. Be sure to explore "Java Genetics" for a great drag and drop pedigree problem to check on an understanding of genetics. This page also features a tutorial video. Sort by subject by clicking on the "Student Centre" and choosing a grade level. Find links and resources on the Main Course page, Tips and Tricks, and also a variety of student projects. Find a video collection that highlights how to use various parts of the site. Be sure to follow the directions on the site on how to download and play flash activities. This is a Canadian site so the subjects at each grade level may not correspond with the subjects for U.S. grade levels. Note: Some of these work with Internet Explorer only. Also, at the time of this review, the site was under construction and updating their standards. All activities were working, however, the site mentions new activities are being added frequently. So be sure to check back.
In the Classroom
Use these resources as an introduction to concepts in Biology or as a great way to review specific concepts. For example, when teaching genetics, use the drag and drop pedigrees as practice for understanding the most basic of genetic foundations. Share the site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. In the Classroom
Use this diagram to have students learn about the carbon cycle in units about matter cycles. Share the diagram on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Create an activity where students use the diagram like a web quest, or have the class interact with the diagram on the interactive whiteboard as a large group instruction activity. Ask students to list the processes and briefly describe them using the information provided in the links. Have students then list the carbon sources and describe them. This is an easy activity and a great interactive alternative to taking lecture notes. Use as a introductory video into science and technology. Identify the science understanding and concepts needed to change the technologies. Brainstorm other technologies that could be added to this list from the various decades. Brainstorm together using a tool such as Mindmeister. Challenge cooperative learning groups to investigate a specific decade and determine what was a new invention then but is no longer used today. Have students create slideshows using Slides. Display these on a blog or wiki for students to review and comment. Use as a study aid for students. This is a great tool for older students (who own cell phones). Students can study their flashcards on the bus, in the backseat of the family car, or while waiting for their dentist appointment! Have students create individual accounts and collaborate with others or create a class account for all to use. Have groups collaborate on the creation of flashcards for students to use or have groups create flashcards for specific parts of the unit. Bring out thinking processes with this downloadable interactive. Each protein becomes a puzzle. Players manipulate the protein into the form that provides the most efficiency. In the Classroom
Allow students time to manipulate this site and learn the structures of proteins prior to the discussion of the content of the unit. Brainstorm what students have learned to develop notes or major content points. Identify the specific proteins and functions and determine why certain proteins have specific shapes. Identify the roles of proteins in the bodies of all living organisms. Connect these proteins with proteins in the diet and discuss the importance. Find excellent interactive tutorials of microscope use and microscopic organisms. Choose from tutorials on Microscopic measurement, Predator and prey, and microscopic comparison. Click on portions of the tutorial for an interactive lesson and move throughout the tutorial using the forward and back arrows. Click on teacher resources for for suggestions and laboratory experiences (be sure to check back as many are under construction. The update for this site was done in HTML and it can be accessed on any device with the internet.

In the Classroom
Use these tutorials in conjunction with classroom activities and instruction. For example, measuring an organism under the microscope is difficult for many students to comprehend. Place this link on a class website for students to follow the tutorial as they are investigating the same procedure on their own in the lab. Consider creation of student videos or explanations of similar instruction in class using Vmaker, reviewed here, to place on the class site or blog; his video/screenshot activity will enhance student learning. Vmaker is an all-in-one screen recorder, video recorder, webcam recorder, and video editor. Use the Predator/prey interactive to determine which organisms belong to each category.
