This site from Texas A&M University provides information on the characteristics and life cycle of fire ants, and describes how and why they are moving northward. The site also shows how to prevent the ants from becoming a problem in areas inhabited by humans, livestock, and pets. The site could be a wonderful research resource for a biology or ecology report.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the different biomes that exist, specifically the everglades. This activity works best if there's a graphic organizer to guide students along. If looking for an easy way to create graphic organizers, we recommend using Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

This site from New York's'''? American Museum of Natural History provides information on several dozen endangered species, their habitats, and efforts to preserve these species and increase their numbers. Each species is really a case study, with significant detail on the plight of that species. Good site for a student interested in some serious research on one or more species.

tag(s): endangered species (27)

In the Classroom

Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector. Explain the principles that lay behind endangered species, give a brief tutorial on using the website, and then divide students into small cooperative learning groups. Have each group pick a section on the website, such as "causes," "why help," etc. Have each student review and research their section, with the intentions of providing a brief presentation of their findings to their peers. To show what they have learned from this site, challenge students to create an online infographic to share using Visme, reviewed here.

Start with Water Basics, and find lots of topics and activities. Review the water cycle on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Engage your students with one of the interactive activities. Once your students have the basics, enhance learning by having them choose a topic as a source for a multimedia project to present what they learned using Genially, reviewed here. With Genially students can insert maps, surveys, video, audio and more. Teachers will likely want to sort through the material before suggesting it to their students.

The TeachEngineering page for "Forecasting the Weather" offers a hands-on activity that guides students in understanding how meteorologists predict the weather. Through this activity, students learn to observe atmospheric conditions, record data, and use simple forecasting techniques to make weather predictions. Designed for elementary to middle school students, the activity encourages critical thinking and problem-solving by simulating real-world weather forecasting methods. This resource is ideal for science teachers looking to reinforce concepts in meteorology with interactive, practical learning that connects to students' everyday experiences with weather. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

Have students keep a daily weather journal for a week, recording details like temperature, cloud cover, wind speed, and precipitation. They can create a weather journal using a free resource such as Book Creator reviewed here. Students can role-play as meteorologists in groups by preparing and presenting a weather forecast. Have students track the path of a storm (like a hurricane or tropical storm) over several days, noting changes in its trajectory, strength, and impacts.

Both sections might be useful in introducing scientific method and experimental procedure.

Teachers, there is an entire section of free lesson plans and activities that can be easily recreated in your classroom. For students, use this site as learning center or station. Allow students to use the site in cooperative learning groups, for any science unit on biomes, ecology, mammals, or data collection. This site would be a great supplement to book materials.
