There is a lot to explore here. You could start with the home page and the many articles listed there. Have small groups divide up the articles to read and investigate. Then have students with the same article meet together to become the expert on that topic (in cooperative learning, this is known as Jigsaw). Have each student in the Jigsaw group create an Awesome ScreenShot, where they can make digital notes with lines, text, or shapes. Have students begin with a rock cycle prediction chart. Before launching the Gizmo, have students brainstorm and chart how they think each type of rock (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) forms and transforms. After interacting with the simulation, they can revisit their chart and make corrections based on what they learned. Guide students through the Gizmo Student Exploration Sheet (available on the site), which walks them through the simulation's hands-on use. As they manipulate variables such as heat, pressure, weathering, and erosion, students can answer questions and track how one rock type transforms into another. Assign students to complete a "Day in the Life of a Rock" writing assignment, where they write a short story from the perspective of a rock moving through the rock cycle.
