In the ClassroomIn environmental science units on conservation, try assigning this website as homework to be done together with parent or guardian help. Have students go through questions with parents and possibly even investigate their own home for evidence of energy losses and good practices. Have students email the report to their parent's address and print a copy to take to school as evidence and for further study. Or, have students' parents forward the email directly to you and print for the students. Have them calculate how much energy they could save as a class, leading them towards discussions of bigger savings overall and how little changes can make huge differences in our environment. In the ClassroomTo introduce yourself to the program, check out the training video. There are templates that you can use to create your designs and they are offered in both metric and English measurements. The application is reminiscent of basic paint programs. Perhaps the best way to learn how to create with this tool is to take some time to "play" with it. The editors at TeacherFirst strongly recommend working your way through a sample before you implement this in a class. It gives your students a great model to visualize your expectations, and it will give you the hands on experience that you can use to help them. Another way to implement this is to roll it out to your students and have them "play" with it. You may learn more from them than you could have ever anticipated. Another neat feature of this program is that it allows you to Google search for previously constructed 3D models and download them directly into SketchUp on your computer!
As part of a multidisciplinary unit in science, technology, economics, math, social studies, and English classes, use this site to create a culminating design project. In English classes, have students create a written grant or design proposal. In economics, have the students discover how to construct the project for the best possible cost. Have the final design project be a new museum or historical/tourist attraction to commemorate a local hero/heroine. In math and science classes, have the students "build" the project with accurate measurements. Then as follow up, have students use Google Earth reviewed here to predict the environmental impact of the new construction. Or, in technology education or industrial arts class, use this as a way to submit project drafts for construction.
Grades4 to 7
In the ClassroomUse the Leader's Guide for lessons that educators can use in the classroom. Assign different students or groups of students different bright papers to read in order to glean bits of material worth sharing. Give time for mini presentations, creation of conventional or multimedia projects, create a wiki of essential information and more. Have students make a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Assign a food journal to students to maintain and have other students analyze the diaries and make suggestions for improvements and deficiencies.

In the ClassroomUse Science Friday as a springboard and resource for research projects, or as an end of the week fun discussion. Play a podcast, and have students discuss the meaning and any possible misunderstandings. You could set up a computer in your classroom with a Science Friday podcast or video set up and ready to go for students to cycle through or for those who finsh their work early.

Play as a review game to assist learning for all students. Encourage students to create the clues and answers to their own Jeopardy review games as a creative way to review and reinforce. Learning support teachers may want to have students create review games together.

In the ClassroomYou can create and/or assign quizzes for any topic. You need not register students to simply assign an activity, but registration is required to keep and report scores. You simply check which countries to include to narrow activity searches, so decide whether alternate spellings might be an issue for your curriculum topic. Students can use quizzes either at home or in school. Use this site to help students review concepts and receive immediate feedback on their performance. There is a direct link in the quizzes to send a link to registered students or to share on social networking sites such as Facebook, iGoogle and Blogger. Assign small groups of students to create their own quiz for any topic you might be studying. Students can challenge their peers as a review.

In the ClassroomCombine this site with The Corning Museum's Glass Chemistry site, reviewed here, as the essential ingredients for a major unit on glass! This website can be used for varying levels of science from introductory chemistry to advanced physics depending on the resources that you choose to use from the site. In introductory chemistry, share the "Sugar Glass Video," demonstrate to the class how to create sugar glass using the recipes on the site, and then have students create the glass in the lab. Have students explain states of matter, temperature change, etc. For physics and other advanced sciences, check out the Power Points and videos on the refractive index and density experiments. Perhaps the recipes and the "create a construction of sugar masterpieces" could be used in a family and consumer science class in a baking or candy unit.

Reading the personal examples under the "Real Life" heading helps to explain some problems associated with cancer risks. Have students write their own Real Life narratives about their friends' and families' experiences with risk-taking behavior. Challenge students to narrate a picture (related to a Real Life narrative) using a tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here. Have students formulate healthy living plans using the "Transitions," "Challenges," or "Daily Doables" worksheets.

Students can access areas of interest, dig as deeply as they are interested into the associated activities, and tailor their own experience. Alternatively, the video segments might be shown on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and students could work in groups on the activities. Finally, you might choose to isolate particular activities and use them in conjunction with your regular curriculum and lessons, and skip the video segments completely. In the ClassroomUsers click and drag design components onto the main layout page. The free draw tool is a bit trickier to control but is similar to drawing tools in other programs. The perimeter measurement scrolls alongside the line you are drawing. The interface for such a complicated concept is intuitive. Students will need explicit instructions on how to operate this program.
Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to share the tutorial presentation and demonstrate how to use the design tools. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Consider this resource to help math students visualize how to compute the surface area of three-dimensional shapes and understand how area and volume change with scale. Social Studies and History teachers can ask students to re-create the interior of an early American home, Greek Temple or even their own classroom. With guidance, this could be a wonderful tool to help younger students understand interior mapping skills. Classrooms focusing on "real-world learning" may find this a valuable resource tool to help students create design plans for an alternative environment.
