This site provides practice with creating and exploring tessellations. Choices are provided to use triangles, rectangles, or hexagons. Once a shape is chosen, the corner can be stretched to create a new shape. Click a button and that shape is converted into a tessellation in front of your eyes! Choices are also provided for different colors within the shapes to enable visualization of how the pattern is created.
The learner portion of the site provides a written explanation of tessellations and information on how they are found in the real world. Be sure to visit the instructor link on the website for information on classroom use, links to standards, links to similar resources and to print an exploration questions worksheet.

Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on tessellations on a projector or interactive whiteboard. This site provides practice with exploring area and perimeter by either allowing the computer to randomly draw a shape on a grid or by creating a space of your own on the grid. Choices are given to allow for questions about area or perimeter, or for both. To check an answer, simply click on the "check answer" button for immediate feedback. Sessions can be scored, or scoring can be turned off to allow for easier exploration. The learner portion of the site provides a quick explanation of how objects can have similar areas but much different perimeters. The instructor portion provides links to standards, some textbook links, a printable with exploration questions, classroom discussion information, and links to similar resources.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups to complete the exploration questions provided on the site. This site provides many resources for math teachers of all grades and includes lesson plans, articles, classroom and administrator questions and answers, and helpful links - all located under the "helpful tool" tab at the top of the site. Click to find elementary resources, algebra, calculus, and other "basic math." Free webinars are also available within the site. Math Solutions was founded by Marilyn Burns, who is known as one of the foremost experts in elementary math instruction.
Although much of the website is devoted to materials and Professional Development for sale, there are many resources available for free that are extremely helpful for classroom teachers. One such resource is the classroom lessons portion. Lessons are in ready to print PDF format making them easy to review and use for planning. Sample classroom conversations are often included along with samples of student work and suggestions for use in the classroom. This site also sells many resource materials, so links to these materials are included for alternative resources within the lesson. No need to buy, however! Teachers can sign up to receive the free monthly newsletter containing information about new materials on the Math Solutions site.

Math is Fun when you visit this website that is loaded with games, activities and much more! Math activities are divided into topics such as Algebra, Data, Games, Dictionaries, Worksheets, and more. After choosing a topic there are several choices for appropriate activities within the category. The teachers page has links to many virtual manipulatives, puzzles, speed math and other classroom activities. All activities contain an explanation and solution to the puzzle. Although this site may appear as another "drill and kill" site, is also has a lot of extra features and activities included. If you are a math teacher, this is definitely a site worth taking a look at.

This site is an interactive, collaborative project that uses Google maps with you and your students to provide content. You can also see Math maps created by others. By following the directions, you can create math problems utilizing information from your own city or town. Once the math problems are posted on the map, you can tweet or blog to inform others about them. In addition to creating problems, your students can view the contributions of others and solve real world math problems. Be aware: pop-up messages do appear across the bottom of the screen. These messages are recent posts to the site. Teachers who wish to contribute must submit a Gmail address to be offered access to add their own "Maths Maps." (Note to U.S. educators and students: What you know as "math" is known as "maths" in the UK, Australia, and some other countries. The "s" is NOT a typo!)

What makes this site special is that the content comes directly from educators and students. Use the existing math problems as a challenge activity or to demonstrate how math can be used in the real world. Share the maps and math questions on your interactive whiteboard or projector. The different pin colors represent different age groups so you can choose appropriately leveled math problems. You can easily differentiate for individuals by telling them which color to explore. This site is a great way to get your students to learn more about their community. Have your students research a community spot and create a math problem about it as a class. Enter the information onto the map together or under teacher supervision for other classes all over the world to use. Use the archives to find activities sorted by season and math strands making it easy to find just the right activity for whatever strand you are teaching. Then allow students to learn through exploration and constructivist learning. Mark this site in your Favorites as a regular stop to look for seasonal alternatives. Consider sharing some areas of the site with parents for students to find math activities that are fun to retain skills over long breaks. This math site is a MUST SEE for teachers of all grade levels. Much of this site is designed for K-8 teachers, but there are a few activities for the high school grades. Although the site is mainly a drill and practice, it offers such an array of topics and levels that there is something for everyone here (and it is terrific for differentiating lessons in the classroom). Sample topics include roman numerals, Algebra II, pre-algebra, measurement, absolute value, early childhood math, telling time, money, place value, fractions, decimals, mixed operations, and more! And did we mention, each topic include rich, colorful interactives for students to practice skills! Most topics also include options to specify content (for example, choosing to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division).

Use "Dynamic Paper" to create number lines, grids, tessellations, shapes, spinners, nets, and more. This web resource is an invaluable tool for math educators. The objects that are created can be exported as PDF files to be used in worksheets or as Jpeg images for use in other web applications or programs. The site can certainly save a lot of time if you have been trying to create diagrams using word processing applications!

In the Classroom
Use these "courses" as reinforcement of concepts, to uncover misconceptions, and to explore interesting topics. Share the activities on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Create learning centers focuses on the specific content of the activities. Have cooperative learning groups (or individual students) explore specific topics and report back to the class. For example, have each group view the activities for a specific body part (blood, brain, hearing, immune system, heart and circulation, skeleton, skin, teeth, and more) and create a multimedia presentation. Some tool suggestions for a multimedia presentation are (click on the tool name to access the review): PBWorks (wiki), Site123 (website or blog), Renderforest (video maybe a newscast), and Genially (poster/bulletin board). Or, have cooperative learning groups create online books using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. This site offers a ton of links to math videos with supplementary support problems. There are many topics, and most include subtopics: everything from rounding to exponents to decimals to pre-algebra! It is a very cool place to find homework help or an alternative teaching approach for various math concepts from things as simple as adding whole numbers to more advanced topics such as geometry. The site is divided by click-able math topics. The site does have some advertisements, but they are fairly easy to overlook. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Teachers could add this site to their class web pages to provide extra support. Specific videos can be shown on the interactive white board as part of learning centers to allow the math classroom to become more like a math laboratory. If you can't find the specific topic you are looking for here, why not challenge cooperative learning groups to create a simple video teaching the new concept(s). View "Use it" to access guided practice for students or "Explore it" for activities that can be used as a teacher demo or practice activities. Additional quicktime videos about the topic and support materials are included. Example topics in the "Number" category include Fractions, Integers, and Exponents. Other categories include "Patterns and Relations," "Shape and Space," and "Statistics and Probability."

In the Classroom
