This interactive site shows how parts of an actual autopsy are done. The site does have a disclaimer that the content may be too graphic for some viewers. However, the "person" is a computer drawn, faceless character. You can click through the site, screen by screen, following the onscreen instructions to complete the autopsy. This includes removing the organs and weighing them. The site also includes a short video about an actual forensic scientist. Average metric weight of some human organs is also included in the site.
In the Classroom
This site could be used as an alternative to dissection, an enrichment activity, or as part of a unit that uses crime scene investigation as part of its delivery technique. Anatomy classes could use this practice and review for quizzes or tests on the human body organs and systems. Show the site using the interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to human anatomy or to dissection. Finding fun and varied activities to keep students moving isn't always easy. The Teacher Toolbox on this site is the perfect find for quick and easy daily activities. After finding the toolbox, scroll down a bit to find the page with the link to calendars. Here is where you will find monthly calendars (in English and Spanish) and divided by age levels - Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary - with a quick and easy physical activity to accomplish for the day. Calendars are also archived back to 2016 so there are several options for each month.
In the Classroom
Plan with the Physical Education teacher to incorporate suggested activities into the curriculum. Use the calendars during math class when teaching calendar skills such as days of the week, elapsed time, and more. Have students graph how many activities they completed each month and challenge students to improve each month. Use on online graphing tool using a site like Statistic - Johnnie's Math Page reviewed here. Practice fractions by comparing activities completed to activities performed each month, compare different students' calendars and fractional representations. Share on your classroom webpage or blog with parents as examples of fun, simple activities to improve student's healthy and decrease obesity.

Are you looking to collect and analyze class data easily? Choose from 16 different ways to view data. Decide the items you wish to count (the free plan allows up to 1000 different things to be counted.) Also determine the category the items can be placed into (use up to 24 different categories in the free account.) Add a statement panel to your display panel to add notes and make comments about the data. Be sure to click the How To at the bottom of the home page to learn how to use the Daytum site. Also click the "Watch A Screencast" link for additional help. Data can also be collected via text or Twitter tweets.

In the Classroom
Some of the best data to collect is anything that is a habit: types of drinks students drink at home, hours watching TV/playing games/doing homework, meals/fast food, etc. Use the site to collect data from other students or classes for a Math, Social Studies, or Psychology class. Use Daytum for a Science class by counting animals at a feeder, recycling efforts, amount of paper used in the classroom, days of rain/no rain, etc. Anything that can be counted can be used by Daytum! Be sure to identify students who will be counters and recorders of the data.Before using Daytum, be sure to follow the directions on the How To page. Be sure to decide the goal first and the data to be collected. Having an idea of the kind of data to be collected as well as how it will be displayed is necessary before using. This tool is best used as a class activity rather than creating individual accounts. Create a class account and use a class computer or computer attached to a projector or whiteboard to collect data as students enter the room. Set up the parameters of the data to be collected (or enlist the help of an ambitious student.)

In the Classroom
Enhance student listening ability with this sound-mixing tool. Ask students to visit this site to create their own musical mix. Afterward, ask others to guess the tracks in the music. Students can also identify to which speaker the soundboard's pan tool is sending various sounds. Activities such as these are the perfect addition to a science unit about the five senses. Consider having students create a their own personal mix to use while learning deep breathing, practicing creative visualizations, or engaging in class relaxation exercises. You could also plan these sounds during creative writing exercises or independent reading time. Headphones or speakers are necessary for this site, if you don't wish to share with the entire class. Students in need of "cooling off" time may enjoy playing Bubble Burst. Choose to create music with the vibes soundboard and student creations will automatically play with Flickr photographs of nature. Emotional support teachers may find this tool useful in helping students develop self-control mechanisms. This easy to use calculator estimates the number of calories needed to gain, maintain, or lose weight. Simply input age, weight, height, exercise level, and gender to receive an estimate of daily calorie needs to maintain current weight. Information is given to help with losing or gaining weight. Other informative links on the site offer diet and exercise advice for beginners as well as articles about nutrition and exercise. Be careful: some links are advertisements. Be sure to check out the diet tools link that offers many other calculators for health, body fat and density, healthy weight range, and more. This same link also offers information about vitamins and minerals and healthy recipes. Be sure to preview the comments at the bottom of the site, as some may be inappropriate to share with younger students.
In the Classroom
During your health unit, ask students to estimate how many calories they think they need or take in each day to maintain their current weight. Then compare their estimate to the actual number based on their personal information. Assign students different articles from the site to read and review. If you are hesitant to use actual student's information due to privacy issues, create fictional characters to use for estimating and comparing. Use this site when presenting a unit on estimation, after using specific examples to set as benchmarks, have students estimate new examples before finding actual figures. In the Classroom
Find fascinating articles and activities to push science topics into more relevant terms. In a unit of Genetics, discuss the Genome Project and its advantages and issues. Read articles and discuss the similarities in human genetics to that of other organisms. Click on "How Unique Are You?" to learn more about common traits such as tongue rolling and hairlines. Follow the registration on this page (username and password only) to find how your traits compare to others. Find lesson plans for many of the topics in these sections including the DNA Database and the issues surrounding its use. Use these resources to further understand what is learned in the classroom and bring to light many of the issues of today. Use the information for class debates or position papers, letters to the editor, or poster campaigns. Have your students try something other than PowerPoint and create a Prezi presentation, reviewed here, all about a topic they explored on this site (independently or with a partner).

This is an extensive collection of ready to go, teacher-made SMART Notebook activities. This collection covers all grade levels and subject areas. Click Elementary, Middle School, Jr. High, or High School to find the many (MANY) resources). The topics vary greatly and the quantity is impressive. You must have Smart Board software installed on your computer to open these files. Some files will work using the SMART Notebook Express online viewer available here. (Download the notebook file from Longwood's collection to your desktop and then upload to SMART Notebook Express site.)

This dandy idea is a clear and concise weekly program to enhance general physical fitness through push-ups. Reading the site is easy; however, beware of some agitating advertisements sprinkled through-out the pages of this site. This would be great for health teachers, physical education teachers, and even school wide health initiatives or challenges. Included on this website are links for two hundred squats, twenty five sit-ups, and twenty-five pull ups. If push-ups are the place you want to start, or if you would like to offer a choice in fitness challenges, these links are worth checking out as alternatives for the teacher running the class or the students' choice. The important thing is to motivate their health with the technology that they already enjoy.

Introduce this program as part of a journal activity in health class. Have students do the initial test in class and then the first workout together. Have students read the introductory how and why pages. Have students check in on each other for form and honesty purposes, and record their workouts, thoughts, and experiences throughout the challenge weeks. Why not create a class workout wiki. Not comfortable with wikis? Have no wiki worries - check out the TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. Do the final test at the end. Fitness prizes such as free passes to the community or school pool or free passes to school athletic events may be a good idea if you can get your district involved on that level. It is worth a try! Districts that are currently pushing for wellness and physical fitness of students and staff should embrace this type of challenge. Finding it difficult to "show" your health or biology students how different parts of their cells, bodies, or even toothpaste work? Try this part of the Vimeo site. It has animations of different cellular and molecular processes. The animations are not only factual but they are beautiful as well. Videos are shareable and can be embedded onto websites. The clips are spectacular for entry level biology students to visualize molecular and cellular processes, but the detail and intricacy of the clips makes them extremely suitable for advanced placement biology students.

In the Classroom
Try using "The Crest Dual Action Whitening Mechanism Action" in upper middle to high school level health classes. Show the video on the interactive whiteboard or projector and then talk about different toothpastes and good hygiene practices. Discuss the "why" of keeping teeth healthy. Cross curriculum and have students develop experiments to test different toothpastes. (Have students use unsealed tile pieces instead of their teeth, just in case of allergies, toothbrush availability, etc.) In biology class, show the video of the T4 Bacteriophage on the interactive whiteboard to start a discussion of bacterial viruses or viruses in general. Have students revisit the video at the conclusion of the lesson, and have them make podcasts of the bacteriophage invasion process using PodOmatic (reviewed here). Try taking screen shots using a website like Jing (reviewed here) to capture different parts of the video to create an enhanced podcast. Just remember: give credit to where it is due. Another thought on how to use videos like this is to embed one on your website, especially during weeks where classes are interrupted by school events or testing, and have students participate in an online discussion of the video. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program has a colorful new "cool" website that cleverly teaches students how to resist peer pressure, abstain from drugs, violence, and gangs. Fun features such as Lucky Kat TV provide cartoons and videos about Internet safety, confronting bullies, and the correct use of prescription drugs. There are opportunities to share photos, poems, and videos and engage in interactive activities. Follow the adult link for more in-depth information meant for parents and caregivers.

In the Classroom
Classes that are participating in the D.A.R.E program may want to bookmark this site on the computers in the learning station and use it as a center. Turn a podium style lecture into a more active learning experience. Project activities such as "D.A.R.E. Squares" onto an interactive whiteboard or projector and enjoy learning about the dangers of using prescription drugs that belong to others. Many of the site features will work as great starting points for individual or group projects. Have your students create an interactive online poster using Visme, reviewed here. Even if your school does not have a D.A.R.E. program in place, this site will support content taught during red ribbon week or health class. Share this link on your class web page and/or in a parent newsletter for those who are dealing with these challenges.

The goal of Girls Health is to "promote healthy, positive behaviors in girls between the ages of 10 and 16." The site addresses issues all young teenage girls face. It provides constructive advice on a number of health issues such as; body changes, nutrition, relationships, bullying, Internet safety, drugs, alcohol, and smoking. There are separate sections for educators and parents that include additional links and materials free to download.

In the Classroom
Girls Health's "Body" page is a great resource to support a reproductive health class. Make sure your guidance counselor knows about this site. Project this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Demonstrate how to navigate the site and then ask students to research various content areas in small groups or independently. Students can find the definition to key terms in the text by following their direct link to the glossary. Use the Drugs, Alcohol, and Smoking as a reliable source during Red Ribbon Week. Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit on drugs. Ask the class to take an on-line quiz to determine what students already know about drugs and what misconceptions they may have. This site is an excellent resource to have students' access during Red Ribbon week. They can create a multimedia presentation to define various drugs and reveal the harmful effects they have on the body. Consider having students create a drug prevention booklet with PocketMod (reviewed here) from the information they learn.
