This is a simple, but highly engaging math trick that would be great for a problem-solving activity or class starter. To play, choose a 2-digit number, then subtract each of the digits from the original number (25 - 2- 5 = 18). Once that is done, go to next, find your original number and identify the gift associated with the number, at the next screen Robin will be able to tell you what the gift is. Students will enjoy experimenting with different numbers and solving for why this will work. The key is that all answers will be multiples of 9 and all of those multiples contain the same gift item!

tag(s): critical thinking (118), multiples (31), problem solving (294), puzzles (204)

#### In the Classroom

Display on your interactive whiteboard or projector and allow students to experiment with different 2-digit choices. Ask students to explore different options on how this works, then journal their solutions.

This site offers practice with length, mass, and capacity using metric units. Objectives are included for each topic and can easily be printed from the site. After choosing one of the 3 topics, there are several pages of resources labeled by the name of the activity. Some resources are for interactive whiteboards and others are printable worksheets to accompany whiteboard activities. The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English; however, it shouldn't create any problems for students to understand. The background of each of the interactive whiteboard resources AND printable pages has a watermark stamp of "For Evaluation Only" which may be distracting to students; however, the activities and worksheets make it worth ignoring.

tag(s): conversions (28), mass (25), measurement (178)

#### In the Classroom

This site is ideal for an interactive whiteboard or projector. Have the students open the site and use the whiteboard tools to complete the activities. If the watermark is distracting, you can recreate the activities on your own to use in the classroom. Follow-up a class lesson using the whiteboard resources with one of the printable worksheets included on the site. Be sure to post this link on your class website during a unit on measurement.

MrNussbaum.com was developed with the idea that crucial concepts, themes, ideas, and fact sets taught in the classroom can be enhanced over the internet through interactivity. Furthermore, for teachers to have a reliable k -8 internet site to use in the computer lab or in the classroom, that likely covers one or many themes currently being taught. The Math portion of the site contains dozens of interactives labeled by grade level and topic. Directly below the links to all different topics offered on the site there is a color coded display to help correctly identify grade-level suggestions for activities. For example, red for 1st Grade, orange for 2nd, and so on. Many different topics are offered including fact practice, estimation, rounding, fractions, decimals, money, time, coordinate grids, metric and standard units, and more. Many of the games offer an introductory video explaining how to play. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. You could always view them at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Online Video Converter, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube. Some activities require a name, Mr. Nussbaum recommends that students never use their actual name but make up something. Names are not stored and login isn't required to play.

tag(s): charts and graphs (197), coordinates (30), decimals (125), estimation (47), fractions (229), measurement (178), money (184), number sense (94), operations (122), rounding (19), time (138)

#### In the Classroom

Make a shortcut to this site on classroom computers and use it as a center. This site offers multiple levels, so it is easy to differentiate for ability levels within your class. Share this link on your class web page and/or in a parent newsletter for practice at home.

This site is a tutorial that models fractions with number lines or circles through several different options. Applets are divided into categories such as identify fractions, rename fractions, compare fractions, investigate fractions, and much more. Each category contains different options for exploration with flash applets to practice that skill. The "investigate" option offers step-by-step explanations of the different categories and would be very useful to offer students when reviewing skills such as comparing fractions and using order of operations. Some of the slide shows are also available in PDF form along with practice worksheets. Another component of the site allows you to input your own fractions to practice your own examples.
