In the Classroom
Use this online dictionary instead of printed dictionaries and thesauruses in the classroom. Be sure to share a link to this site on your class website. Display the word of the day on your interactive whiteboard as a lesson starter during writing or language arts lessons. Ask students to include featured words during writing activities using Google Documents, then highlight each time the word is used. Choosing the Curriculum link on the top menu will give you access to units such as The Meaning of America, Songs for Free Men and Women, Lincoln and the Constitution and a others. Each unit has several "sessions," a Curriculum Overview, a Discussion Guide, and some with links to video clips and music or pertinent information about the topic. Click the library tab at the top to find many famous early Americans Authors, Videos, Texts, Study Guides, Songs, and Art.

Take advantage of the many resources on this site for use with civics lessons, Constitution Day activities, and teaching about primary resources. To become media literate, students must learn to raise the right questions about what they are listening to, watching, or reading. Use the search bar and the drop-down box to search by name and type of file. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to save favorites and track downloaded files. In the Classroom
Before using, share this site with students on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector and demonstrate how to save files. Ads by images can be deceiving and lead to other download sites, not to the download of your requested file.Use Stockio in the classroom any time images are needed for projects, even if the project is not put on a website for others to see. Even though the site says "no attribution required," it is a good idea to have students acknowledge, or as the site says "appreciate," the origin of the image; this will help to get them into the habit of citing their sources. Student groups can use Stockio to find the best image to use for a project collectively. Challenge students to create personalized images (with text) using PicFont, reviewed here. Teachers can collect images for use on their interactive whiteboard for sorting activities (monocots and dicots, producers and consumers, etc.). Use images as a writing prompt or in poetry collections. Art teachers can find images for students to use as references or in photo-montages (with attribution or "appreciation" as they say on the site). For an easy online photo editor and montage maker, try using Pixlr, reviewed here. Elementary teachers can use images from this site as part of student-run interactive whiteboard activities, such as labeling parts of plants. Speech and language or ESL/ELL teachers can find images to use in vocabulary development activities. World language teachers can find cultural photos to use in oral exercises.

Find out the local time and temperature in countries as you study them and compare their local time to yours. Include time/date conversions for online conferences you will hold with parents who are deployed or traveling in different time zones. These six activity collections from the Smithsonian Center provide engaging, hands-on activities for integrating technology and developing STEAM skills. Activities include creating a 3-D insect model, a trading card game for discovering patterns and connections, and creating wearable tech. Each activity includes a complete lesson plan along with additional ideas for extending learning and reinforcing content. Choose any collection to view resources and download the PDF lesson plan.

In the Classroom
Save activities from this site to use as hands-on STEAM lessons throughout the year. Introduce the Smithsonian collection resources on an interactive whiteboard or projector and explore the included items together. Flip your classroom and include a link to museum resources for students to explore before your lessons, and have them create online stickies sharing their thoughts on collection pieces using lino, reviewed here. Instead of having students complete written responses during your lesson, ask them to respond to questions using a video response tool like Gravity, reviewed here. Gravity offers users the opportunity to submit video responses to questions and add comments to other users' responses. At the end of your STEAM activities ask students to create a multimedia presentation sharing their activities and reflecting upon learning opportunities provided. Use a tool like Sway, reviewed here, or Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education , reviewed here.

NEXT.cc shares activities and online information to develop ethical imagination and environmental stewardship through design. The information is based on Common Core and Wisconsin Art and Design Standards. Begin your journey by choosing from one of the many icons. Each journey includes a short description of the content and links to several activities featuring games, research projects, or discussion questions. When finished, take a short review quiz or select from the many links providing additional opportunities to explore each topic. Videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

Students will love seeing the wide variety of visitors to their classroom website. Have a student share locations of viewers with other students, then research to learn more about those areas around the world.
