Certify'em is an excellent addition to every Google Forms members' toolbox. Create and share certificates with students for successful completion of quizzes and tests. Use Certify'em as a means for differentiating instruction by allowing students to take a pre-assessment test before starting a new unit. If they obtain a certificate, offer an alternative extended learning activity. Use this add-on to "certify" students for various classroom needs, such as learning safety procedures before starting a science lab activity or to "certify" students to take care of class pets.

Open-Ended Social Studies is an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook designed to foster critical and historical thinking skills through interactive content. Find resources related to the United States and World History in many ways: browse lessons by concept, country, films, travel writing, or search the library of lessons by keyword. The lessons are designed to be used by students and include many hyperlinks, images, and videos that support the included content. In addition to the teaching materials, this site contains a beneficial blog with content that supports the site's philosophy, which is to teach students through a broader world lens.

In the Classroom

This site is an excellent addition to any middle or high school social studies curriculum. Bookmark this site to include with your other lesson resources. Use individual lessons to supplement your lessons through a new viewpoint since many of the tasks encourage students to think of history through the eyes of a traveler. Each lesson begins with a series of focus questions to keep in mind throughout the article. Engage students in learning and provide support for focusing on important information using Read Ahead, reviewed here. This handy tool lets you transform any text into a guided reading activity that highlights critical components of the text. As students collaborate on learning activities, enhance learning by using Notejoy, reviewed here, as a collaborative note-taking tool. Ask students to add the preview questions listed before the lesson and any other focus points, then share ideas and responses in Notejoy throughout the reading and discussions of the content. As a final learning extension, ask students to use Open-Ended Social Studies as a model for telling history through the eyes of a storyteller or from the perspective of one location. Use Vizzio, reviewed here, to create interactive timelines using animated maps. Include text descriptions, images, and videos as part of your interactive timelines.

The Reading Trek provides a virtual field trip of resources using the Maps features of Google Maps. The Reading Trek includes a map link, KMZ file, and PDF guide for using the resources in the classroom. The list of ideas includes suggestions for working with maps based upon the novel and extension activities. In addition, find several additional resources suggested for further consideration. Activities are correlated to Common Core Standards, National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies, National Core Arts Standards for Visual Arts, and Next Generation Science Standards.

Vizzlo is a free chart maker site offering a wide variety of options for sharing data in different formats. Get inspired by visiting the gallery to view examples of the layouts and means for sharing data. To begin creating, sign in to your account and select "Create." If you know the type of chart you want, use the keyword search to find it. Next, browse through the page to see examples, or use the filters to find options by use, type, and alphabetical list. The possibilities include well-known charts, including timeline creators and pie charts, along with less familiar varieties such as puzzle charts. Select a chart to begin creating by using the features found on the dashboard. Personalize data, colors, and the page setup. When complete, download as a PNG image, share a link by email or embed the code into a website. Free plans offer many features and access to a wide variety of charts; however, all charts created using a free plan will include Vizzlo's dominant watermark on the image.

tag(s): charts and graphs (168), data (146)

In the Classroom

Bookmark this site to share data through many different formats and representations. Collect data in your classroom and quickly create a graph to represent it, then choose another design to share the data in another way. Share your charts by adding links or uploading images to blogs, wikis, or websites--share graphs on an interactive whiteboard or projector for better data analysis by the class. Graph results of a test, answers from students, favorite foods, fictitious budgets, class schedules, and anything applicable in your classroom. Use an informational text, and have students create a pie chart to understand how to read charts accompanying the nonfiction texts. Have cooperative learning groups create graphs to share on the class wiki. Create quick pie charts on your interactive whiteboard whenever you count class votes or encounter other data so students "see" data visualized regularly; visual students will have another way to absorb the information. Keep the link handy on your web page for you and your students to access it quickly in or out of class.

In the Classroom

Include Glorify as part of your teacher toolbox as a resource when creating graphic designs for classroom use and student-created projects. Share Glorify and a couple of other graphic design tools such as Canva Edu, reviewed here, and Genially, reviewed here, with students to provide options for creating and including information on presentations. Enhance learning by asking students to create short tutorials for using the features in Glorify using a screen recording tool such as Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here. Share the tutorials on your class playlist created on YouTube, reviewed here, or as a link on your class webpage. In the younger grades, teachers would create projects; however, older students can easily create their own Glorify presentations. Have students use this online tool as they would any presentation tool or image enhancing site. Use this site for research projects about famous people from the past and present. Have cooperative learning groups create presentations about science or math topics. Have students create presentations to "introduce" themselves to the class during the first week of school. Link or embed the introduction presentations on your class wiki or website and have others guess who they are.

This helpful document provides a visual timeline sharing the history of voting from 1776 through the present time. Black and white images and simple explanations guide voting, beginning with the introduction of voting for white men over twenty-one and chronicles changes throughout the years, including eliminating racial barriers and women's voting rights. Although some information is specific to Washington State, this timeline includes all federal voting benchmarks, making it appropriate for use in any classroom. Blooket works well with both in-person and remote learning and offers a variety of game options, including games for single players and groups. Additional Blooket options are offered as homework, meaning students participate at their leisure during the provided time frame. Enhance student learning by creating timelines that include information from this document and additional information from your lessons. Canva, reviewed here, offers many easy to use timeline templates that allow you to add links to outside sites, images, and more. Extend learning by asking students to interview local election officials or senior citizens to share their experience with voting rights and regulations. Ask students to create presentations sharing what they learned using Google Slides, reviewed here, or Microsoft PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. Include links to audio recordings of interviews, add images, supporting videos, and more.

This page is perfect for sharing with students to explore and find people and events of interest. The page is quite lengthy; if looking for specific information such as an event in a particular city or a person, use the search for text feature on your computer to find that information. On a Mac, use "Command+F"; on a Windows device, use "Ctrl+F"; another method for easier viewing is to click on the magnifying glass found on the bottom, left-hand corner of an image. This option allows viewers to scroll through a slide show of the images that include a short description of the activity. As students find information to research further, use the Wikipedia Timeline Generator found at Class Tools, reviewed here, to view a chronological list of events related to that person or event. Use other templates found in class tools to extend learning further. For example, use the Venn Diagram generator to organize and understand overlapping events and people involved or ask students to use the Fakebook generator to create a fictional social profile for one of the people featured on the New York Times page. Extend learning by asking students to become reporters and write news articles about current or past Black History events not found in this article. Consider using a simple web-publishing tool like Telegra.ph, reviewed here, to create and share articles that include student-created text along with images and web links.

Simultaneously spinning multiple wheels opens the door to unlimited uses to engage students. For example, create six wheels with the numbers on dice as a virtual dice roller. In addition, customize wheels for creative story writing prompts that include options for random characters, setting, and story theme. Use this tool to practice math facts by creating wheels that prompt players to solve math problems based upon a spin of the wheel. Engage students when reviewing for upcoming quizzes and tests by creating wheels to check facts. For example, in social studies, create one wheel with names and another with characteristics such as date, place, important event, other characters involved, etc. Use during math lessons on probability to have students record outcomes when spinning the wheel.

In the Classroom

Include this article with your other digital citizenship lessons as a starting point for classroom discussions or as part of a broader lesson in responsible citizenship. Consider selecting a tip each week to explore further with your class. Engage students by beginning the week using a word cloud creation tool like Answer Garden, reviewed here. Use the tip as the prompt in Answer Garden and ask students to share their thoughts and ideas. Continue to build upon your students' ideas throughout the week using Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to create a template for students to share digital stickers with information. For example, the fourth tip recommends that all online users carefully craft their message. Create a Jamboard divided into columns labeled grammar, clarity, and audience. When crafting online content, ask students to share specific ways to keep these topics in mind. As an extension activity, ask students to write a short article sharing tips and information on becoming responsible digital citizens. Use a simple web-publishing tool like Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Although Telegra.ph is simple to use, it offers features that allow students to create and share simple websites, including links, images, and more.

In the Classroom

This tool is perfect for enhancing, modifying, or transforming classroom technology in the classroom, depending on the requirements of the assignments. Create invitations, flyers, or newsletters for your classroom. Share what you created on your website or blog for students to review or for absent students. Deliver blended or flipped lessons using Desygner by adding links to videos, assessment information, and other learning activities. In the younger grades, teachers would be the ones creating the project. However, older students could easily create their own Desygner presentations. Use this tool with your 1:1 art class to practice design principles and techniques. Share student projects with parents and others via URL. Be sure to demonstrate how to use this tool on your interactive whiteboard or projector or create a series of video instructions. Use Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, to create and share video screencast tutorials.
