Tortoise Technology Integration

Presented by Kevin Bower

Session Description:

Many teachers have the mindset of the hare from Aesop’s Tortoise and the Hare. Learn how to implement the Tortoise mindset for technology integration.

Purpose:

The famous fable, The Tortoise and the Hare, is a terrific analogy for growth mindset for teachers and technology integration. Growth mindset this the foundational concept built upon grit, perseverance, determination, and resilience. Many teachers are like the Hare which supports a fixed mindset, they believe they either have or lack the natural ability to “win the race” in regards to integrating technology in the classroom. It is essential to think about how we structure our interactions with teachers to foster growth. Like the Hare, deep and transformative results which we seek seldom come fast. The time frame for implementation is usually longer than the time frames we expect. It is difficult and often overwhelming for teachers to take on new initiatives and challenges. The temptation is to close our door, unlike the Tortoise which challenged the Hare to a race. The Tortoise is operating from a Growth Mindset, and he embraces challenges by challenging the fastest animal in the forest to a race. We need a cultural shift that communicates a struggle is achievable by all and success is not a gift for a select few.  Join us as we explore strategies and resources to foster a growth mindset with teachers.

Objectives:
    • Distinguish the growth mindset from the fixed mindset with technology integration;
    • Describe how you can influence a teacher’s mindset with technology education;
    • Identify three strategies for encouraging the growth mindset in teachers with technology education.
