This site was written to be a series of online, interactive courses for Chemistry, Electronics, and Physics. Although much of the site contains lessons to be purchased, there is still a lot of free material available that would make this a valuable resource for content information. Each lesson contains an introduction, explanation of the topic, questions to correspond with the material presented, a summary of information provided, then follow-up review questions.

tag(s): test prep (96)

In the Classroom

Provide a link on classroom computers or in the computer lab for students to review this material at the end of the unit. Place the link on your wiki, site, or blog for homework help. This site offers mathcasts provided by students and teachers of all ages and grade levels. Mathcasts are screencasts (screen movies of writing with voice) that focus on mathematics. The easiest way to get started on the site is to find the link to the mathcast library located on the left of the screen. When you open the link, there will be choices of mathcasts sorted by authors (children, students, teachers) and subject (Algebra and Calculus). In addition to the video mathcast, some presentations also include downloadable PDF tests and quizzes. For those interested in creating and sharing their own mathcast, there is information on how to do this by choosing the mathcasts link in the tree on the left of the screen, then choose to make your own mathcast. Suggested tools for creating mathcasts are Voicethread reviewed here and Jing Voicethread reviewed here.

This wiki is a treasure trove of resources for teachers to use when using the Differentiated Instruction model of instruction. The site is most easily navigated by choosing topics from the links on the left side of the page. Topics include background information, planning and managing, and professional development tools. After choosing a topic, there is a list of links: some are to videos, others are to Word or PDF documents that can be downloaded for immediate use. One particularly rich resource on the wiki is the section titled Questioning & Thinking Skills. Located here are many resources such as how to write great questions, a Blooms Taxonomy interactive quiz, podcasts about Blooms Taxonomy, an Essential Questions PowerPoint, and much more. This section is worth a visit just to review the resources. Another well-developed portion of the wiki is the Pre-Assessment link. Here you will find many documents to use for pre-assessment of knowledge as well as activating prior knowledge resources.

tag(s): assessment (107), blooms taxonomy (9), differentiation (49), learning styles (20), questioning (33)

Create your own tests to be taken online and graded instantly and accurately. With a free account, you can save 100 test results a month. ClassMarker allows you to add your own tests to be taken online and graded instantly. ClassMarker will randomize questions and answers, add time limits, and preset test availability dates. You can choose from multiple choice, short answer, essay & more question types.

Registration is not required. You can embed the tests on your own web page. This method is useful for practice tests since test results are only saved when students are registered and logged into ClassMarker. To register students, you create a group, add the student names (use a code for online safety), and create a password for the group. Or students can register themselves using a registration code you give them. You can then transfer users to multiple groups after they are registered if you wish.

Flashcard Maker, as the title implies, is an online tool to create flashcards. This site also has a healthy bank of prefabricated flashcards that could easily save time in meeting your needs. The link to "Explore Flashcards" allows you to search for prefabricated cards sorted by subject and topic. You can save as sets of cards with tags and share with friends. You can add images to cards, making them not only more interesting to use, but also more versatile since you can identify and learn more visual things than standard flashcards. You can change the flashcard theme, font size, and viewing order.

tag(s): flash cards (47), test prep (96)

In the Classroom

Create flashcards for your classes using Flashcard Maker-- or have them make their own. Try using them as a introduction to a concept, then again in the practice of the concept, and again as a final review. It is a nice three for one creation deal! This would be great for teaching Latin prefixes and suffixes of words to students, use in science terms, or for standardized test preparation. Try having students create flashcards and share with each other to quiz themselves within their own groups. Teach students in higher grades how to create flash cards with multiple blanks to challenge their brain to remember more pieces of the puzzle. Show them how to carefully read through their classroom notes and underline the most important word or words in a sentence. Then have them leave out the most important words for their flashcards. Learning support teachers might want to have small groups create cards together to review together before tests. Have students create flashcard sets to "test" classmates on what they "teach" in oral reports.

Don't let the title mislead you! Find listening and reading activities for any listener who enjoys audio stories at a teen and adult level, including the advanced English language learner. There are short stories, books, radio scripts, and songs to listen to and read, as well as English idioms, sayings, and slang. You'll also find a Reading Comprehension and Test Preparation area with interactive activities to help students read and understand English and prepare for reading exams. Unlike many audio book sites, this one includes recent and popular selections for almost anyone, including teachers and parents! Don't miss classic radio shows perfect for discovering life in 20th century decades past.

tag(s): listening (91), radio (27), reading comprehension (119), short stories (24), test prep (96)

In the Classroom

Project a story or song on an interactive whiteboard or projector for group listening, reading along, and discussion. Literature teachers can use the site for a class novel, so lower readers can have audio support at home for listening and review. You could have small groups of students listen to different short stories, and make up Bloom's type questions for the next group of students to answer, or they could turn the story into a Reader's Theater piece and video tape it, or perform it live for the class. Share the videos using a tool such as SchoolTube reviewed here. This is a terrific site to list on your class website for students to use for at-home practice or enjoyment. For elementary and middle school students, you will want to provide the specific url for the selection you want them to use so they are reading articles appropriate in content for their age group. If you supervise a study hall, keep this link handy as a listening option for students who "don't have any homework."

This site offers explanations for trigonometric functions and identifies the most important formulas as a basis for learning and understanding trigonometry. The concept is that student learning will increase with understanding of basic concepts instead of memorizing all formulas by rote without comprehension of meaning. There is a printable version of the site which can be used for student journals or notebooks.

This site was created by a university-level Math instructor; however, it can be useful for high school Math students and teachers also. Contained within the site are downloadable notes and tutorials for Algebra, Calculus I, 2, and 3, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. Each set of notes is quite in-depth and includes detailed definitions, examples, and tips. Notes can also be printed in PDF form. Be sure to scroll down to the bottom portion of the site for an Algebra/Trig review, Common Math errors, and advice on how to study Math.

In the Classroom

This site is perfect to use with gifted students who are ready to move on to more complicated math skills. Allow them to explore and learn higher level skills on their own. Print PDF's relating to classroom concepts being taught for students to place in their Math journals. Use this site to review skills taught in previous courses.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

I like this idea. A homework assignment could be to print a page and then be required to make up a problem that fits the subject area. Thank you, Heather Heather, CA, Grades: 9 - 12

Accomplish your resolutions and goals with this clever resource. Develop a goal, determine the measurable increments towards its completion, and track the progress over time. This is not meant as a "to do" list but as a way to make meaningful changes toward life goals. Create your list by answering "I want to..." Create a title for the list, add 10 goals, then lock in the goals. Click on a goal to create a comment (these can be identified as progress reports using the checkbox below the comment box.) Accompl.sh has a user community that can help in motivating you towards your goals, so be aware that your input is visible to the public. Whether it is New Years or another milestone day, this is the tool to get you started.
