Created to accompany the PBS Nature series, this site offers several pages, nearly all text, about polar bears. That content is informative, as are the resource links, but don't bother with the links for teacher materials or puzzles, which link to materials for other programs in the series, but not this one. Add this one to your favorites for a unit on bears, the Arctic, or biomes and ecosystems.

As with anything involving water, lots of the good stuff in this site lies beneath the surface. Developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the site introduces the interplay of science, public policy, and resource management that go into managing water resources. These take the form of a collection of lessons and related background information that ask students to examine scientific facts and develop management strategies for water resources.

tag(s): environment (319), resources (112), water (131)

In the Classroom

Both the approach and the lesson topics are attractive, and this one could be a winner for thoughtful secondary science faculties.

This striking page is the home for a year-long exploration of biodiversity by Chicago's Field Museum. There's a wealth of information and resources, especially for teachers. If you're near Chicago, there are also lots of opportunities for hands-on interaction, but there are also many online and downloadable resources that biology or earth science faculty may find useful. This one is probably worth checking periodically over the next year.

Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite.

In the Classroom

Share a photo of the day as an activator at the start of a lesson on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Allow a student of the day to select his/her photo of the day as a class inspiration. Share a photo as a visual writing prompt. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class. Use selected collections on laptops with student partners (galleries) to provide a visual experience of a location or culture you are studying, asking students to observe for visual evidence of some of the major concepts you have discussed in class.
