These activities provide an introduction to financial concepts and tips to getting on the right financial footing for a secure future. There are four different activities. Each contains interactives by grade level-- up through high school. Even thought the cartoons appear juvenile, the concepts are adapted to be appropriate at each level. Concepts included are debt, making profit, and investing assets. In addition to the games, there is a portion of the site for adults. Here you will find lesson plans for each of the activities by grade level: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12. Lesson plans include handouts, additional activities, questions for the classroom, and learning objectives.

tag(s): financial literacy (80), money (193)

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for financial literacy activities. Create a link to grade-level interactives on classroom computers or computer lab computers after demonstrating how to play on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Differentiate activities for students using the grade-level option. After trying the interactives and completing classroom activities challenge students to create a newspaper article about finances using the Newspaper Clipping Generator.

Present.me is a place to upload presentations, add voice and video, and record your presentations to share with anyone. The free version of the website allows you to store up to 15 minute presentations, record 10 times a month, and use 50 MB of storage space. This would be a great way to deliver distance presentations or enhance your online teaching. If you are shy about presenting in person, record without the crowd!

In the Classroom

Try using present.me to create lectures using your existing PowerPoint presentations. Share the link on your webpage or wikispace. This way, students can spend homework time completing notes and acquiring basic information. You can use classroom time to have students do hands on activities or laboratories. It is a great way to maximize the time you have to teach your content and intensify the impact by having students use the information to better understand it. Prepare a presentation to share with parents at back to school night. Challenge students to create their own presentations, rather than completing a traditional research project. Shy students may be more comfortable recording a presentation in advance.

Create online pictographs easily and quickly with this simple, but very effective graph creator. Choose from a blank template or 3 pre-made graphs (choosing favorite color, sport, or fruit). Creating a graph is simple: choose the blank template click on the box at the bottom of the graph and type in a response. The site recognizes many words and will display the word and an image. Click to the right and add another possible response and continue to do this until all options are completed. Once the chart is created, responses can be added by clicking above the word or picture indicated. Each response is added with an image. One great feature of this site is that the chart can be flipped to have the pictures on the y axis instead of the default x axis, showing the different ways information can be displayed. Results can be shared by embed code...in both editable and read-only versions

tag(s): charts and graphs (195)

In the Classroom

This site is perfect for your interactive whiteboard or projector. Create a survey of the day for students to complete as they enter the classroom each day. Use the pictograph creator to make a graph to compare to a line or bar graph completed in class. Share read-only versions of graphs made in class today as embedded items on your class web page so students can review them or use them for homework questions tonight. Allow students to come up with topics for surveys and let them create the chart to be used. Have students create their own pictographs at an IWB center for "hands-on" practice with the concepts.

Interested in using QR codes in an engaging way? Try this Treasure Hunt Generator that uses QR codes. It's simple. Enter your questions and answers. Then click Create the QR Challenge. These are generated as text files which can be printed and posted wherever you want. Students use a QR reader (such as on iTouches, iPads, or phones) to scan and open the question and directions. Students then continue on by finding and answering the questions.

Note: QR code readers exist for every type of phone and are easily found on the Internet. For computers, add-ons exist for Firefox and Chrome as well as a desktop application from Adobe.

Use to make any class content into a treasure hunt for knowledge. Keep students engaged by creating learning centers that have a question requiring an answer and perhaps another activity at the center before going on to the next. Have students learn and answer questions about mystery objects, art prints, or books/authors with accompanying QR codes. Identify trees by creating a QR code with a question about the tree and perhaps another link taking them to specific information. Create a scavenger hunt around the school asking questions about activities in the school or certain student projects found in showcases. (The first QR code could be printed in the school newsletter.) Create a treasure hunt with books in the library to test library search skills or to find a specific book and answer questions from the index, table of contents, etc. Use QR codes on objects in Geometry to ask questions about the shapes or solve a problem based on a physical object. Any subject area and content could find a use for this Treasure Hunt Generator. Challenge students to create their own QR treasure hunts as a way to "present" research projects. Use in social studies for the entire class to create a QR code hunt around your community to bring local history to life for all residents.

Find useful, interactive whiteboard resources, downloads, and lesson ideas (aimed at the elementary levels). These resources are divided into categories such as Flashcards, Scorers, Interactive Stuff, Time Killers and the Lab. Each of the resources can be downloaded or accessed directly from the site by clicking the image next to the title. They will run on computers or any brand of interactive whiteboard or projector. Flashcard sets include handwriting practice, number practice, the Verbinator, mysteries, flags of the world, and more. Scorers are different forms of scoreboards use keeping track of game play. The Lab section is a very nice interactive demonstrating proper formation of letters in block, basic, or cursive script. Click on the color link on this page to break each of the letters into colored sections to help visualize the proper letter formation. Be sure to check out the interactive clock and dice located under Interactive Stuff. This site appears to be updated often, so be sure to check back. The downloads are JAVA applets that can run offline. Unfortunately, the activities do not work on iOs devices like iPads.

In the Classroom

Display the handwriting flashcards on your interactive whiteboard as a student-operated center to practice letter writing skills. Choose random letters, and have students make a list of words beginning with that letter. The What's This activity would be great vocabulary practice for ELL students or speech/language students. Use the Timekillers on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) for a quick 5 or 10 minute class or center activity.

This great area and perimeter resource lets you set the design for a party. Follow the directions about the size of the area needed to house each of the items for the party. Drag the corners of the icon to create the space needed. You have three tries to get the correct area and perimeter before you receive a different puzzle (same difficulty level). As you complete each party room, move up to more difficult levels. Incorrect choices are explained briefly. There is also a "?" button to click to learn HOW to manipulate this activity. One unfortunate drawback: there is no easy "return to start" button on this activity. You have to hold down your browser Back button or finish the game.

Use this as drill and practice for area and perimeter. Have students work as individuals or groups to understand these concepts. Have students create a similar exercise for classmates using different scenarios and objects. Provide this link on your class website for students to access (and practice) at home. This activity would be easy to duplicate as a student-created challenge on interactive whiteboard using the grid background that comes in the whiteboard software. What other challenges could students create to practice area and perimeter? Save their student-made challenges on a class wiki for future use with other classes or as review.
 This resource requires Adobe Flash.
