Create and play learning games with Sugarcane. Choose from eighteen options for game types including matching, associating, ordering, and categorizing activities. Sugarcane offers several additional options within each of those categories. Next, enter data in the template or import CSV or Excel files with your information. The last step provides options for personalizing games. For additional help, Sugarcane includes tutorials each step of the way. To learn more about the types of games available, browse through topics on the home page of the site to find and play games created by others. Use Google or Facebook to make an account or fill in a username, your email, and a password. You can play and create games without an account; when creating a game, you need an account to save it.

Bookmark and save this site throughout the year. New to using technology or games in your classroom? Not comfortable creating games? Use the ready-made learning games on class computers or provide links to activities on your class website or blog for use at home. Another option is to challenge older students to create educational games for their peers using the templates and instructions provided. Instead of a research report, they can create a game! Share with parent helpers or classroom tutors to create review activities for student practice. Learning support teachers can have small groups create a game together to help review any material. Assign a small group of students to work with different game templates and then act as "host" of the game to quiz the rest of the class. Sugarcane is an ideal review or way to present student research information on a topic and keep the "audience" engaged.

PingPong is a free app creating an interactive network between a host and responders. Log in and create an account to begin, then share the room code with participants. Ask participants to share a response choosing from five different options: multiple choice questions with four or five choices, true/false, send text, or send an image. View responses in real-time as participants submit answers. PingPong is different from many other response systems because the host doesn't enter the questions and responses into the app.

OpenEd claims to be the world's largest online library of free education resources - videos, lesson plans, assessments, games, and more. Search with a keyword and filter by grade, subject, standard, resource type, or publisher. Save for later use, or assign to all students or just a few. There are several ways to register students: manually with email and password, give them a code, or upload students from Google Classroom or Edmodo. In the assessment area, a convenient feature is the ability for the teacher to assign videos to the student for review if they answered questions incorrectly. Then the student can try again. Both instructors and students can sign up with email and passwords or social media such as Google and Edmodo. Some videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. You could always view them at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Freemake Video Converter, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

Share polls on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start a new unit, asking questions about the material. Discuss in groups why students would choose a particular answer to uncover misconceptions. Use for daily quiz questions to check student understanding as a means of formative assessment. Use a class account to have student groups alternate to create a new poll for the next day. Place a survey on your teacher web page as a homework inspiration or to ask questions to increase parent involvement. Older students may want to include polls on their student blogs to increase reader involvement. Have students create polls to use at the start of project presentations. Use surveys to generate data for math class (graphing), during elections, or for critical thinking activities dealing with the interpretation of statistics. Use "real" data to engage students on issues and current events that matter to them.

Create a Triventy quiz as a tool for checking prior knowledge or making a quick assessment. Have students answer exit questions or see what students remember from the previous day. Use for formative assessment to identify misconceptions that students may have at the start of a unit. ESL/ELL and world language teachers could use this for vocabulary practice and take advantage of the many different language options. Have students create quizzes with characteristics of story characters for classmates to see which character they are most like.

tag(s): flash cards (47), game based learning (111), gamification (73), quizzes (99), test prep (96)

In the Classroom

Introduce Termling to your class and demonstrate the different features available. Create study materials for individuals to differentiate learning. Have students set up and share their own study materials. Show students how to read carefully through their classroom notes and underline the most important word or words in a sentence. Then have them leave out the most important words for their flashcards. Learning support teachers might want to have small groups create cards to review together before tests. Have students create flashcard sets as a follow-up activity to "test" classmates on what they "teach" in oral reports.

Quizlet Live is a classroom quiz game for groups created by the makers of Quizlet, reviewed here. Follow directions to create and share a quiz set and assign to student teams. At least six students are needed to create a Quizlet Live game. When students receive the code and log in, they find other team members and begin competing. Accuracy is encouraged over speed, providing a wrong answer will send teams back to start from the beginning of the quiz.

tag(s): DAT device agnostic tool (167), quizzes (99), spelling (166), vocabulary (325), word study (79)

In the Classroom

Use Quizlet Live to introduce new topics or content, or as a review before testing. Quizlet Live would be an excellent tool for the start of the year to help students get to know each other, or use throughout the year to have students work with different students in cooperative learning activities.

Discover, create, and share digital resources from the Smithsonian Museum, the National Zoo, and nine major research centers with this visually appealing site. Use the search feature to find digital resources including photos, recordings, videos, and text. Sign up to create your own collections, including those found on the site and your own resources. Add annotations and develop quizzes. Easily share your creations or curated collections using social networking links provided. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. You could always view them at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

The Smithsonian Learning Lab is a must-add to your list of classroom bookmarks! Search for collections and information throughout the year on all topics. Add a link to classroom computers for the entire site or specific collections. Be sure to take advantage of the many features of this site to create customized collections, then have students add additional resources. Have students create quizzes for review of topics. Challenge students to create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Easel.ly, reviewed here.
