In the Classroom

Use information from this manual as a guide for developing physical fitness and skills with students. Share this information with your school's physical education teacher. Include a link to this site on your class website for parent viewing at home. Have students upload a photo they have taken when exercising and add an to explanation about how this improves physical fitness using a tool such as Add Text, reviewed here. Have students create an online graph using ChartGizmo, reviewed here, to document physical activity over the course of a month.

BAM takes the notion of "fitness made simple" to a new level while making fitness, safety, and disease prevention engaging for kids. The Centers for Disease Control provides a wealth of colorful, visual, and interactive resources for children looking to maintain healthy, fit lifestyles. Sharing information on diseases, food, nutrition, physical activity, safety, and the changing body and mind through children's lingo, articles, and interactives. Access all interactives through the left-hand navigational menu, making it easy for kids to find information. A prominent search box in the upper right-hand corner returns links to articles in the whole CDC site, not just BAM. A teachers' corner provides ideas for integrating these activities into the classroom. Because of some of the mature or disturbing nature of the information, e.g. deadly diseases, be sure to preview materials.

In the Classroom

BAM is packed with interesting content and engaging activities. Use BAM with the whole class to teach a particular health or science topic using an interactive whiteboard or projector. Small groups and individual students can browse through the sections and play the interactives. Assign specific areas for students to complete at school or home as part of blended or flipped classrooms. Many downloadable handouts are available for classrooms with limited tech.

In the Classroom

This collection could accompany a unit in health, science, or physical education. These books provide experience with both fiction and nonfiction informational texts. They often require students to draw inferences about the "facts." Allow students (or partners) to choose their own book. Share this list with your school library/media specialist or public library, as well, for them to "pull" books in support of your science/social studies units. Extend the experience by having students create visual presentations of the concepts they learn. Challenge students to create a presentation using Prezi, reviewed here, or Slides, reviewed here.

Healthy Hopping provides information on staying healthy by jump roping and eating healthy snacks. Learn how to do jump rope stunts along with rhymes and games. Choose from several snack ideas that provide energy through good nutrition. Although quite simple in its appearance, Healthy Hopping offers many great suggestions for learning jump roping skills and healthy snacking.

In the Classroom

Share Healthy Hopping with your school's Physical Education teacher as you work together to teach any health and nutrition unit. Challenge students to learn different jump rope stunts and practice during recess. Share nutritious snack ideas with parents, ask them to provide different snacks to your class each week. This is an ideal site to share during JumpRope for the Heart (if your school participates). You might even want to organize a PTO/PTA jump rope night and invite families to bring in healthy snacks. Share these ideas with your fellow teachers to fight childhood obesity.

Share videos and activities with students on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow students to explore using classroom computers. Use the included lesson plans as part of a nutrition or fitness unit or when discussing health issues of classmates. Use the resilience lesson during class meeting time. Be sure to include a link on your class website or newsletter and share with parents. Teachers, in addition to parents, guidance counselors, and nurses could find this site very useful.

Give yourself a brain break using the interactive classroom resources at GoNoodle. These activities promote health, fitness, and mindfulness and are based on cutting edge research. These engaging games and activities provide short bursts of movement leading to improved focus and energy within the classroom. Create an account and if you have multiple groups of students (or classes) start by naming your class(es), since each class will show progression on this tool. Choose from Discover, Categories, Channels, or Curricular Resourses. Each title has multiple sub-categories. Some options are for paid memberships only. None of the games takes longer than five minutes. While most of these are physical tasks, a few are mental/logic activities. Time required for the activity is shown with each option. Registration does require an email address. If your district blocks YouTube, some activities may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Share these short activities on your projector or interactive whiteboard for your entire class to view together. Bookmark and save GoNoodle as a before class (or before the bell) activity, perfect for those long winter days inside. These would be great activities as you head into high stakes tests. When your class needs to refocus, use GoNoodle as a short brain break. Use GoNoodle to motivate and reward class accomplishments. Share with learning support teachers (or emotional or autistic support) for use in motivating and reinforcing behaviors with their students.

Challenge students to create their own variations of the games shown or new games entirely. Add an early morning exercise period for all students to burn off energy and be ready for their day. Use this site to compliment your unit on healthy lifestyles. After school programs can try new ideas to make this time exciting and fun.

FIT by WebMD is a great website to promote health and healthy opportunities for students of all ages. Explore five different areas of health: Food, Move, Recharge, Healthy Weight, and Mood. The site offers a far healthier approach to fitness than simply weight. Highlights include an age appropriate body mass index calculator, video clips, recipes, age-appropriate articles, and more. There is an entire Parents area so everyone can be involved together.

A free registration gives the member free tools like a Food and Fitness Planner, Vaccine Tracker, Symptom Checker, and many more. The registration information required is minimal and is legally appropriate for the age level.

In the Classroom

Check school policy on setting up student accounts or work together with parents on this. Read the the articles together. Have students track and monitor their Food and Fitness over that time with the . planner provided. Tracking their own progress will be educational and fun! Keep a class "Workout Wiki" that can serve as a meeting place and neutral location to store exercise goals and nutritional changes. Maybe even include a recipe area for fit foods.

In the Classroom

Use this as an introduction to a unit on nutrition or as a follow up to review what students have learned. Create a healthy living campaign at your school through creating posters, newsletters, and mini lessons that when added up can make big changes. Have students create online posters on paper or do it together as a class using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here. Have students keep track of what they eat and compare diets to make recommendations for change. Consider creating a campaign of pledges that students and parents can take for healthier living.
