This small but creative collection of activities spans a diverse range of topics from American history and taps into the imaginative minds of elementary students. Visit the "Activities" section to learn about great women of the past, WWII Japanese interment camps, or slave life and the Underground Railroad. Each topic includes background information, links to related children's literature, and ideas for hands-on activities. The some of the "Activities" provide interactive activities that immerse students in creating Native American buffalo hide paintings, building a sod home, and looking at life through the eyes of an historian.

How does this year's presidential race differ from those of the past? Are there significant similarities or differences? This collection of 183 campaign commercials from 1952 through 2000 provides a revealing and thought-provoking glimpse of the art of politics over the decades. An analysis of partisan advertising campaigns is included for each election year, along with a map showing election results. Click on "Highlights and Themes" to explore attack ads, the multiple roles expected of a president (family man, commander in chief, "regular guy," and leader), and biographical information. The Desktop Candidate section discusses the impact of the Internet on the voting public. Be sure to check out the link to Educational Materials, which includes a teacher's guide and suggested activities. Some of the older video clips require Flash but can also be viewed as a PDF. There is plenty of information to learn from that doesn't require Flash.

tag(s): elections (80), politics (113)

In the Classroom

Use the information at this site to compare past campaign commercials with current ads for the 2008 presidential election. Search the Internet for recent commercials (using whatever video websites are permitted at your school). Share a sample of commercials from the 1950s - the present. Have students discuss the similarities and differences. Have students create their own ad commercials about a presidential candidate that they support or a "mock" candidate that they created. To upload the students' commercials, use a tool such as TeacherTube (explained here). Be sure to obtain parental permission before videotaping any students.

Learn about the plants and animals in this ancient environment, and visit a cave in central Missouri to examine paleontological material. Hyperlinked words within each section allow students to explore subtopics in greater detail. The site also provides links to related resources materials. This is an intriguing site that would work well as the focus of a teacher designed Web hunt.

A bad example may be worth a thousand words. This site takes a playful and insightful approach to the best of the worst, providing visual images of "fine art" that, in some cases, defy description. Art teachers will find this to be a useful resource for illustrating what students should not emulate. Projecting this site in art class will provide rich material for discussion on style, form, and composition. Browseable sections include Portraiture, Landscape, and Unseen Forces. PLEASE PREVIEW and select images before projecting in the classroom. A few pieces in the collection are not "school appropriate."

If 19th century British authors are part of your curriculum spend some moments browsing through this site that sheds light on the lives and work of the authors of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre . Walk the streets of the Town of Haworth in Yorkshire and experience the village as it was known by the Bronte sisters. Visit the chronology section to discover connections between events in the personal lives of the sisters and the economic, political, and social conditions of the world in which they lived. A family tree, comprehensive biographical information, summaries and analyses of the novels, and links to related resources are provided.

Use this site as a introductory activity before reading one of the many books by one of the Bronte sisters. The family history will provide some background on the two authors, that would be great contextual information for students before beginning a class reading of one of their novels. Have cooperative learning groups explore the information, with the intentions of summarizing the main points in a multimedia presentation. Try having groups create a magazine cover of a sister, highlighting her accomplishments - we recommend using Magazine Cover Maker, reviewed here)

Billed as a virtual museum, the site is divided into "wings." There is an enormous amount of information on this site! The History "wing" includes biographies of the Wright Brothers, information about the history of flight and some little known facts in an area called "aviation's attic." Along the side are links to music files with music of the early 1900s such as the Wrights might have listened to. The Adventure "wing" looks at models of airplanes and the science of flight, and includes more music files. The "Information Desk" includes news about local Dayton, Ohio commemorations of the centennial of flight. No lesson plans and no areas specifically for educators, but lots of facts and pictures spread out all over the site.

Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a lesson on the Wright Brothers and their impact on flight. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Assign each group a "wing" or subsection to read and research with the intent being for them to present their findings to their peers. Enhance learning by having students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows you to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report that their classmates know virtually nothing about. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Pikwizard, reviewed here. This makes the most sense if the reports and presented chronologically so students can piece together the history of the Wright brothers.

Possibly the most interesting aspect of this site is the information they have on the Manhattan Project. Access the article via the "History articles," found after searching through the "Online exhibits" section. The article is lengthy but extremely informative and interesting. Separate the article into parts, assigning the separate parts to pairs or cooperative learning groups. Have the class put together a digital book of the history, with students creating their own individual pages from their sections. While it may seem a bit disjointed at first, the students will pick up a lot of the key details and the results will be really entertaining when the class reads it together over the interactive whiteboard or projector. We recommend using a site such as Bookemon, reviewed here for the online book.
