This government regulating site tracks campaign and political donations both to candidates, and from whom. The site strives on providing clarity to political sponsors, bringing about the question of bias and political influence of sponsors.

tag(s): politics (113)

In the Classroom

Use this site on the interactive whiteboard during a lesson on campaign finance. Looking at parties or recent candidates, explore with students who's donating, leading into a discussion of the impact that donations can have. This would be great after a lecture detailing finance reform, such as the McCain-Feingold act in a U.S. government classroom.

This nationally focused news source makes for an excellent resource for a teacher or student looking for current events - though there is a liberal tilt. There's information ranging from politics, global news, business, technology - even pop culture. This would be useful in any classroom where a knowledge of the now was focused on.

During a lesson on the impact of the media on government and public opinion, have students select this newspaper and another to study for bias. Using a venn digram, have students compare the audiences of both papers, as well as framing issues, coverage, and popularity by numbers. Use an online tool such as the 2 and 3 Circle Interactive Venn Diagrams, reviewed here. This would be a great in class activity before a class discussion of the impact newspapers can have, before focusing on the effects of more popular mediums - such as television.
