This site from New York's Museum of Modern Art uses animals as an introduction to art appreciation. Students can view a selection of different art works, make their own observations about what the artist is showing, and learn about the role of art in cultural expression. The site can be used successfully at several different levels.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. This site would be useful for any teacher trying to teach interpreting art, or a language arts teacher teaching writing. A lot of the questions asked by the site are excellent examples of digging deeper or asking questions that are useful in interviews. While some areas feature information about visiting the actual museum, there is a rich collection of information and multimedia experiences to make World War II history meaningful. Scroll down the page to From the Collection to the Classroom and sign up for a free account. Then, find lesson plans and multimedia resources for the classroom. Click WWII History button at the right to find many pages of information and a timeline. Don't miss many choices under Student Programs.

In the Classroom
This site could be the focal point for an extensive unit on World War II, with different student groups investigating aspects of the war. Or feature this site during a single lesson on D-Day. Ask students to decide which technology depicted in the science and technology interactive was the most important factor in the outcome of the war. This interactive site is especially designed to give upper elementary students an introduction to ancient civilizations, World War 2, and the Victorian era. It contains interactives, artwork, printables and quizzes.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector and try the activities as a whole class. Or have small groups rotate to a whiteboard and manipulate the activities together. Put a link to the activities on your class website and let students use as a center. Use the quizzes as a pretest to see what students already know. When you have finished studying the unit have students retake the quiz to see how much they learned.
