This recording of an OK2Ask online professional learning session is from July 2023. You can register and immediately view the archive of the session.

Join this session to explore strategies for scaffolding student research projects. Help students generate questions, seek out answers, and explore complex problems, then teach them to locate and evaluate information about their intended topic. Use the tools and strategies provided in this session to guide a full project or to help students practice these essential skills. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Define inquiry-based research and how it benefits students; 2. Understand the process of scaffolding inquiry-based research; and 3. Learn strategies for effectively scaffolding inquiry-based research. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Read. Inquire. Write. is a free curriculum using investigations to support middle school social studies learning through inquiry-based lessons; also, this site provides many supports for English Language Learners within the activities. Use the provided literacy tools to guide students in analytical reasoning and argument writing within the 5-day investigations. Each investigation includes all materials needed including teacher's guides, student packets, rubrics, student models, and a PowerPoint presentation. Also, all activities provide video models demonstrating methods to encourage student thinking and investigative responses. Each lesson includes correlation to Common Core Standards. Registration is required to download materials from this site. Videos reside on YouTube. If your school blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Instead of using paper documents, scan the included PDF or Word documents into Google Classroom or your school student/teacher platform to share and assign to students. Be sure to include mentor texts for student use. Enhance student learning by asking students to use highlighting and note-taking tools within their word document to provide documentation for their responses. Although this site includes many high-quality graphic organizers, create your own and using Diagramo, reviewed here to engage students and personalize for your classroom use. Have students use a digital portfolio tool to share their investigations. Spaces, reviewed here includes many resources for creating online portfolios and web pages. Consider sharing the activities found on this site with your peers as a model for redesigning lessons you already use in your classroom. Use Padlet, reviewed here to collaborate and share ideas, activities, and resources as you work toward incorporating inquiry lessons into your classrooms.

Take advantage of the many free lessons and resources on this site. Share a link to the Chemistry Review on your class website for student use at any time. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their science learning process using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, challenge your students to create a blog using Edublog, reviewed here. Challenge cooperative learning groups to enhance their learning by creating videos demonstrating their inquiry science activities. If you or your students are less experienced with technology, use a tool such as Powtoon, reviewed here. Those who are more experienced might try using a tool like moovly, reviewed here, and share them on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here.

The NASA SciFiles provides award-winning, inquiry-based and standards-based videos promoting STEM learning for students in grades 3-12. This section of Knowitall.org is designed to introduce students to NASA through the use of problem-based learning. Each series (topic) has four 15 minute videos, starring the Tree House Detectives solving problems and searching out answers using the scientific method. Find every area of STEM included in the series from environmental issues to space travel, energy to physical fitness, and everything else you can think of for STEM. Some specific sample topics include Case of the Shaky Quake, Case of the Galactic Vacation, Case of the Mysterious Material, Case of the "Wright" Invention, and too many more to name here.

In the Classroom

The video lengths make these perfect for classroom use or for young people to view on their own. Flip your classroom and use a video as homework. Have students take notes on the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. Or, extend learning and use a tool like playposit, reviewed here, for students to pause videos and ask or answer questions right on the video. Show the video to the class, and then discuss the concept at length. Consider giving all students a chance to voice their opinions (even the shyest and quiet ones) by using a backchannel tool like GoSoapBox, reviewed here, during the discussion.

Freckle Education is a Common Core-aligned program with resources for math, ELA, science, and social studies for K-8 that adapts to individual student skills. Freckle has over 50,000 math questions matched to all math standards and more than 500 ELA non-fiction articles that often cover social studies and science standards as well as all ELA standards. There are five reading levels offered for each article. Sign up to create a class account and add student information. Students login in through an iPad app or with the online web version and the class code. Students complete a diagnostic pre-test and then begin working at their individual level. Awards of coins for completion of levels promote student engagement and enjoyment of the program. Freckle also promotes student collaboration through their inquiry-based, cross-curricular lessons. Other features include a scratch pad for working through problems, virtual manipulatives, and individualized printables for practice. Receive detailed analytics and student reports on your dashboard. You may encounter a warning about how Freckle may not work on your browser and to use the Chrome app. For this reviewer Mozilla FireFox and Microsoft Edge seemed to work fine for a student pre-test and the teacher dashboard. This program is great for supplementing your instruction, differentiating, blended learning classes, and remote learning. Freckle was titled Front Row.

In the Classroom

After creating your classroom account and adding rosters, introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. If you are lucky enough to have a class set of mobile devices, allow students to use Freckle while you work directly with individuals or small groups of students. Freckle is a great way to supplement instruction for both gifted and special needs students. Use in your blended learning class, when you want to differentiate, or when teaching remotely. Visit the FAQ section for ideas for implementing Freckle in your math, ELA, social studies, or science classroom. Be sure to share login information with parents for student practice at home.
