Other TeachersFirst Special Topics Collections

Design thinking focuses more on understanding problems and developing creative solutions for people than on implementing generic solutions. Design thinking goes through phases of collecting feedback and data, using the data to identify the problems to be solved, developing prototypes, and testing solutions. Feedback from key stakeholders should be used often. The above phases are iterative and cyclical, using feedback and changing the design to solve the problem. In design thinking, failure isn't an end, it's an opportunity to refine and create something better. Design thinking focuses on divergent thinking -- generating and exploring as many ideas as possible before narrowing down to a solution.

Change colors, add backgrounds, and much more. When finished, download to your computer. In the Classroom

Use this site as part of any graphic design or art class to learn about the use of color, text, or design. Have students design a logo for your classroom or school, then use a different logo each month on your class website, newsletter, or any classroom communications. Have students design a logo for a book character to use on their "pretend" business card. Ask students to create their own personal logo for use on a business card. The possibilities are never-ending!

Each journey includes a short description of the content and links to several activities featuring games, research projects, or discussion questions. When finished, take a short review quiz or select from the many links providing additional opportunities to explore each topic. Videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. You could always view them at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Share this site on classroom computers, on an interactive whiteboard, or with a projector to explore together. Include this site as part of your bookmarks for lessons in design, science, or art using a bookmarking tool like Symbaloo, reviewed here. Many of the activities have students create online and interactive documents. Following are a few suggestions for these activities. Try Click2Map, reviewed here, which uses display markers featuring text, photos, and videos! Have students create an annotated image including text boxes and related links using a tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here to demonstrate their understanding of a concept. Ask individual or groups of students to create a multimedia presentation sharing knowledge learned using an online tool such as Sway, reviewed here.

Share Metaverse Studio with students as part of any computer skills class. Ask students to brainstorm ideas to create using this site. Use a tool like Padlet, reviewed here, to share ideas and suggestions. As students become comfortable using this site, have them videotape tips and suggestions for creating experiences using Screencast-o-matic, reviewed here, then share them using a tool such as SchoolTube, reviewed here. Share a link to Puzzle Prime on classroom computers and your class website for students to access on any device. Consider having a "puzzle of the week" activity for students to complete on their own or in groups using activities on this site. Ask students to demonstrate their thinking process in completing puzzles by demonstrating on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Take this a step further and ask student to create a video explanation using a tool like Screencastify, reviewed here, and share them on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here. Use these puzzles as examples and encourage students to create their puzzles for others to solve. Have cooperative learning groups create podcasts sharing problem and puzzle solving tips; for this, use a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here.

Share Microsoft Visual with students interested in computer coding. Have students sign up for training that meets their interests. Bookmark this site for use during your unit on measurement or to provide hands-on activities throughout the year. Share interactives on your whiteboard or during small group lessons and discuss problem-solving ideas with students. Add a link to interactives along with other online games to your class website for game play at home. Consider adding favorite links from this site to a bookmarking tool for student use. Padlet, (reviewed here), offers several options for sharing and organizing bookmarks. After completing lessons or activities, ask students to reflect upon their learning and share problem solving ideas through a blog post. Telegra.ph reviewed here, creates "quick and easy" blogs to be used one time only. A unique URL is provided, and with Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. It's as easy as using a basic Word program!

In the Classroom

Coding is an excellent way to teach critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Use this site as homework, a center, or in a lab setting. Courses are self-paced, so differentiation is easy. Explain to students that coding is a critical skill in today's world filled with technology and will also be a valuable skill in the job market. Many jobs that will require coding do not yet exist. Put a link to this tool on your class website, blog, or wiki. Since registration is via email, for young students consider using a "class set" of Gmail subaccounts, explained here; this tells how to configure Gmail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. Using Gmail subaccounts will provide anonymous interaction within your class.

TED-Ed Clubs provide a platform for students aged 8-18 across the world to explore ideas, share information, and participate in global conversations. Begin by applying to start a club to discuss thoughts and ideas of interest to your group through the leadership of an adult facilitator. Each club is open to up to 50 members. Clubs provide 13 meetings beginning with three sessions exploring TED Talks, following that, students learn how to frame and share ideas. At the conclusion, participants upload their final talk to the TED-Ed YouTube Channel. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. You could always view them at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Freemake Video Converter, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

Facilitate a TED-Ed Club to promote problem-solving skills and creative thinking in any subject. Challenge students to pursue ideas of interest to them in the classroom. Create a club as an after-school activity for like-minded students, or as enrichment for gifted learners. TED-Ed Club provides an outlet for some quieter students with interests other than what is offered in the curriculum, encourage these students to share their interests and passions through the guidelines provided in the clubs.

In the Classroom

Share this site as part of a simple unit on measurement and scale (blueprints!) or in discussions about the environment, engineering, and the impact of human behavior on our world. Include it as a link on your class web page for art classes, gifted classes, or environmental issues. If you teach CAD or tech ed, this site is a wonderful example of drafting put to use in the real world. Have your science students research some of the materials used in the designs or analyze the structures' load bearing properties in a physics class. Share this site as part of career explorations so students can explore what architects say and do. Explore Daylight as an "immersive experience" to "revitalize the relationship between art, photography and the world-at-large." This visually rich site shares "stories" of artists along with images of their works. Note that just as the world of art can include material that may not be classroom friendly, so can this site! A few include nude images (and one had an inappropriate hand gesture). Preview and select specific "stories" for sharing with young people. The vast majority of the artists, however, offer awe-inspiring works of photography, digital art, and artists' statements explaining their works, all quite appropriate for any audience interested in photography. Note that you can return to the home page and access navigation by clicking the little D or small green box with lines in the top left corner. There is a free iOS app version of this site, as well.

In the Classroom

Share this site as part of an art course or a photography class. Use it as an example of ways students can share their own online art or photography portfolios with accompanying statements. Then suggest tools such as Wix, reviewed here or Weebly, reviewed here for them to build that portfolio. Teachers of gifted can use Daylight to compare and contrast the way artists talk about their work with a site such as Biomimicry reviewed here that explores the relationship between nature and design. Are science and art related? In what ways are scientists and artists alike?

What is Biomimicry? It is the copying of patterns and ideas in nature to solve technological problems. The number 3.8 refers to the billions of years there has been life on this planet. Biomimicry brings biologists and designers together. As our impact on the Earth has wrought much damage, this new approach can solve some of our most pressing problems. Find a wealth of resources within each of the major topics on this site. Use the Inspiring tab to read articles and view other media about Biomimicry. Wish to learn more or pass on information? Use the Educating tab for ideas for K-12 and University students as well as your professional growth. In the Classroom

Use this resource to learn more about Biomimicry and how technological problems have been solved using this approach. Share the stories with your students as informational (and inspirational) reading in the sciences. For example, schools of fish swim through a vortex of water that pulls them along with the others. This understanding is being used to design better wind turbines. Look through the Biomimicry Fundamentals ideas to see where you think you should start with your students. Challenge your students to explore the site for articles THEY believe are connected to something they have learned this year in your class. Create a wall of pictures and ideas in the classroom of patterns and processes learned in class that can be an inspiration for design later. Gifted or technology students will love learning about Biomimicry.

Inspire your students to SEE the natural world differently! Biomimicry is the imitation of nature's best design ideas to solve human problems. This tool provides a free resource toolkit for K-12 educators. View the desktop or mobile version of the toolkit. Immerse yourself in the lessons, videos, activities, and tools offered in this resource. Be sure to check out the links along the side that include Curricula Divided Among the Fundamentals, Youth (K-12), and University. Be sure to notice the extensions, homework, assessments, and other ideas offered with each of the activities. Lessons in the toolkit are arranged in sections: Introduction (exploring what is Biomimicry), Exploring Nature (connecting students with nature), Case studies, Function (how strategies of other organisms can help with our own functioning), Pattern, and Design Projects (to teach the design process). Battle of the Beaks and Velcro Race Game are lesson examples in the Function section. Join the Biomomicry network and connect with others. In the Classroom

Be sure to spend some time with the toolkit to see all that it offers. Use the resources to engage students in content that would otherwise be considered dull to some students. Use the lessons to change from teacher-led information about topics to research-driven student investigations. Use the lessons to provide a vital connection students need to the natural world that is becoming increasingly lost with each generation. Find simple activities found on the Core Concepts pages. Each section has articles and other resources for better understanding. Many of the resources encourage questioning, the creation of ideas, and formation of solutions. Other resources (such as in the Core Concepts), encourage students to look at nature differently and understand how we are part of nature and the biodiversity on Earth. Expand many of the Patterns lessons to identify how humans have copied patterns found in nature around us and how these patterns improve our designs (ex. the shape of an egg/strength of an arch). This resource would be a wonderful extension of the classroom for motivated students, especially gifted! Include it as a challenge level during a unit on plants and other science topics for your gifted middle schoolers. Assign each group a specific concept of Biomimicry to learn and understand. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Easel.ly, reviewed here or Venngage reviewed here.

Level up your learning with Gamestar Mechanic. Gamestar Mechanic is a fantastic free site to learn about web-based game design and 21st Century skills. Your journey begins with a series of mini adventure quests that teach you the core principles and fundamentals of game design. Earn new game design elements such as blocks for constructing levels, characters, and other items with each level of completion. The levels scaffold from learning about gaming principles to "repair" games to fix improper mechanics. Unlock more items to widen your workshop experience with the more missions you master. The workshop offers drag and drop tools to create your own original games without having to program. You must be able to beat your own game to publish it for friends, family, and the Gamestar Community to play. Game Alley is a space for players to publish and review games. Teachers have an extensive collection of lessons at their disposal, with clear goals provided for the student. This game contains no inappropriate content, but contains a fair amount of reading and may be too complex for younger players. All communication on the site is moderated, and there is no live chat of any kind, nor any use of personal information. Premium options are available for purchase. In the Classroom

Game design allows learners to build technical, technological, artistic, cognitive, social, and linguistic skills. Students can collaborate in small groups or with partners to work through the Quest adventure. Use Gamestar Mechanic as a platform for creative writing opportunities. Each level of the game unlocks the next section of the story. Games are an emerging form of self-expression and communication. Integrate spelling words, vocabulary words, and word wall words in the story. Challenge your gifted students to create math problem solving activities for each level of an original game. Students can collaborate by linking multiple games on Webnode, reviewed here, which allows students to provide the exposition to a multi-level challenge. Have students unlock content or clues for a unit by conquering Gamestar quests. Students can create review games for their peers with content from various subjects. Create an educational scavenger hunt for your students. Each level of the game unlocks a task or clue to a physical task around the classroom.
