J.K. Rowling's site is a welcome change from the standard publisher's fare, offering an assortment of Harry Potter trivia and many interesting facts about how the stories came to be and have evolved. While it's not strictly instructional, this one would be a great source of facts for a Harry Potter webquest.

This extensive source, designed especially for elementary and middle school students, provides excellent information about the ancient cultures of the Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. An additional section explores 19th - 20th century sub-Saharan Africa. Images of museum artifacts from each region are liberally distributed throughout the site, along with some interactive maps, occasional videos, and games. The Teacher Resource section provides lesson plans (aligned to national standards), suggestions for integrating art into the social studies curriculum, and helpful tips on using the site.

This page developed by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam offers some breathtaking features that will bring the artist's work to life for your students. Click on the "Van Gogh & Gauguin" link for a beautifully designed multimedia presentation that goes far beyond background information to reveal the very soul of the artist. Another must-see is the virtual 3D tour of the permanent museum collection. It requires the download of a Windows plug-in (directions are provided), but it is well worth it to walk through the rooms, learn about the paintings, and interact with other visitors (a feature that must be monitored closely if used in the classroom).

Apart from the art, students can learn about what a myth actually is, and read about multicultural mythological themes. Includes a glossary, bibliography, and teaching materials.

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on myths & legends. This would be a great introductory activity, as a lot of the content is defining and providing examples that differentiate the two. This would be a great resource for a Language Arts teacher.

Of special note is a "World Literature in Painting" link that thematically connects art with classic literary works.

Use the "World Literature in Painting," to find images to accompany your study of a piece of literature. The images hosted here are small, but the descriptions are descriptive and provide some excellent background on the art and literature. Find larger copies of the image elsewhere, and use them over the interactive whiteboard or projector to introduce interpretations of a piece of writing. Bare minimum, this would be a great way to show the impact the writing had on the culture.

Art, Literature, U.S. History - Works by some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century are represented in this massive collection of powerful images documenting memorable events in American politics and culture. Project selected photos in class to introduce an event in history, inspire student photographers, or introduce a writing prompt. The sight is searchable and quite user-friendly. A fee is required to download images.

tag(s): photography (118)

In the Classroom

Use the photos found in this site for writing prompts. Search within the site or browse the subjects offered to find one that corresponds to a unit being studied. A good example would be the images taken of the Great Depression. Pull up a select few of the images and prompt students to tell the story of what is happening in the image, the emotions seen, and what kind of impact this is meant to have of the viewer. An activity like this does require some background knowledge so this might better suited towards the end of a unit as review. This site would benefit teachers of nearly any subject, especially history, language arts, civics and science.
