In the Classroom
Use all of these resources in a Family and Consumer Science class or health unit on foods. Find great downloads that are of use to students as they begin cooking such as Kitchen Safety Checklist and Cooking with Microwaves. Allow time for students to look over the site and find information they did not know. Challenge students to create a one minute lecture series using Prezi, reviewed here, where they give their tips, along with researched information to understand the "science" behind the tips. You or students can create posters that remind students of best practices using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here. Have students create a checklist they can take home to evaluate the practices in their household. Report back on the most ignored practices that others should follow.

Top Documentary Films contains a large collection of documentaries from around the world. Choose "Browse" to explore the films available, or use the Categories menu on the right to view by topics such as Politics, Science, etc. Choose List from the top menu to view a complete listing of all available films. Each listing includes a short description along with a link to view the video. Videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable. Be sure to PREVIEW videos before showing to a class as they are unmoderated. Comments are also unmoderated. There is a wonderful disclaimer at the lower left of the home page about bias and documentaries. It is well worth noting as you watch ANY "documentary."

The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings (and some of the currency) may differ from those in America. However, American dollars are also shown at this site.

Use Bad Maths images as a great class starter discussion. Display an image on your interactive whiteboard and challenge students to find the flaw. Since many photos show British currency and metric units, use these images as a way to learn conversions to more familiar units. Challenge students to find their own examples of Bad Maths in your neighborhood and share in class. Give them bonus points for taking a cell phone shot and sending it to you! Learn calorie density, carb-protein-fat ratio, and various ways to burn off the calories. Add items to the "My Pantry" portion of the site to make side-by-side comparisons of different items. Use the permalink button to share your pantry via email. Note: There is no log-in required. The pantry page explains, "And don't worry, your pantry will be saved for you when you come back!" The pantry collections you make on this site appear to be saved by placing "cookies" (the technical kind, NOT the edible kind!) on the local computer where you make them. This means that the person who opens the site next on that computer will have all your selections showing. Try clearing your web browser's "cache" if you do not want this to happen.

Use the Calorie Gallery as an excellent addition to any health or nutrition unit. Have students use the site to gather information on all items they eat over the course of a day. Look for healthier options to high calorie foods. Use the meal planner option to create and compare various options for meals. Share this link on your class website for students (and families) to access at home. Calkoo is a great free tool to replace expensive graphing calculators that many students may not have. Calkoo works well on computers, mobile devices, and interactive whiteboards. Use this site during a unit on careers, economics, or financial literacy. Include it as part of a measurement unit. Share during Family and Consumer Science units to explore the cost of living and have students put together a mythical "budget" for living in their chosen career. Have students send you on a vacation and include calculations for the currency converter, fuel cost calculator, sales tax for souvenirs, and more! This is a great site to support many experiments in science. Calculate acceleration, velocity, and time, or use the mathematics category to complete problems. Use this tool in social studies class for quickly calculating years or months from important timelines or when figuring out geographical distances. In English or L.A. classes, quickly figure out the life span of authors or how long ago a story took place. In health or science classes, use the BMI calculator or get other accurate measurements. Learn to manage money while having fun living on a 20 "bean" salary using this printable game. Use the directions and discussion questions to play two rounds of the game. Although it is possible to play with individual players, the site recommends groups of between 2 and 5 players for optimal results. Even though this game is "low tech," it is a great teaching tool!
