This section of the Cut-the-Knot site offers several neat interactive probability illustrations, along with descriptions of several classic probability problems, each of which illustrates a different aspect of probability. These are great, "Why is it that...?" discussion starters, and well worth a look.

tag(s): probability (96)

In the Classroom

Open the probability problems on the interactive whiteboard or projector, having students attempt to work on the problems in cooperative learning groups. This is a great way to review a unit on probability, as are the sections at the top entitled "What is probability?" Share the site on the class wiki or web page to allow students to access it in and out of the classroom for review.

This fabulous collection of interactives and tools supports math and science concepts across grades 3-12. There are also lessons to accompany the activities and a dictionary of math terms. Sort by "audience" to narrow the listings by level: 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12. Version 3.0, released in 2010, provides better searching by activity type and curriculum term. Click at the bottom of the screen for an "interactivate Guide" to explain the various ways you can search, or simply click on Learner Activities to browse and see the breadth of offerings in areas such as Number and Operations, Geometry, Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Modeling, Discrete, and more.

tag(s): numbers (119), operations (71)

In the Classroom

Mark this one in your teacher favorites, then return to select activities in support of math or science units. Many curriculum topics have multiple offerings, so let students choose from among three to five activities for homework, in-class practice, or student- demonstrated skills on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Rotate different student groups to run the demonstrations and explanations of the interactives or have them write explanations of them on a class wiki for others to use for review and practice.

Open a problem on the interactive whiteboard or projector and challenge students to compete to solve the problem first. Some of the problems are fairly tricky so be sure to give enough time for students to complete it!

Here's a site for the serious math students from the publishers of Mathematica math software. The content on the site is completely separate from any product information. It includes examples and discussion of more than a dozen mathematics concepts from algebra through calculus, number theory, and even "recreational math." We particularly like the conciseness of the explanations. Students who need another look at a concept will almost certainly find something useful here. This site is a great reference tool or study aid.

tag(s): probability (96), problem solving (226), statistics (116)

In the Classroom

Put a link to this site on your webpage for students and parents to access when needing an explanation for any math concept. Because this is a text heavy site, sure to demonstrate the site in class with your projector. Ask for student volunteers to give concepts they would like more help with, and demonstrate that section of the site to the students.

Some of the ideas come in spanish versions, which would make it easier to comprehend for ESL students!

Have students attempt to solve the problems on a whiteboard before allowing them to use the site to check their work. Use the "Mathematician of the day" section on the interactive whiteboard or projector as a brain-warmer at the beginning of class. Highlighting important mathematicians can help connect the ideas to people, making the subject more tangible. What's great about the mathematicians mentioned is that there are links explaining who they are and their significance in the math world. Try testing students on identifying the scholars before exploring the biographies.

This is not a test, but a set of carefully selected problems which can help you improve your problem solving skills. It works if you try to carefully think about how you would solve each problem, and once you have found the solution, you make sure that you understand all parts of the solution. You can try any problem you like and if the problem is a little difficult you can get helpful hints by following the hints link. Complete solutions are available to teachers with e-mail addresses upon request. The problems are separated by grade.
