In the Classroom
Use the printables in your classroom when students do not have easy access to the internet. Try something more adventurous by showing a chemistry video on your interactive whiteboard. To use this site even further, have students try out a virtual lab tool as an alternative to a hands on lab assignment. Assign groups to different (specific) topics and challenge the groups to present their lab and results by creating a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Make this link available as an alternate way to look at concepts when students are "stuck" or confused.

This site offers media (found on YouTube, Vimeo, and Flickr) on a broad spectrum of topics, not created for kids but appropriate and interesting for children 3 years old and up. Media isn't divided into categories. The newest items appear first. However, you can search the site by keyword. Information ranges from animal stories of a dog without legs to video of Ella Fitzgerald scatting. Obviously, this site is updated frequently, so contents will change. Students and adults alike will love browsing for interesting stories and information.

Check first to be sure the media are not blocked by school web filtering. Choose one item from the site to share on your interactive whiteboard or projector as a class discussion starter on current topics or as a lead-in to a lesson. (Example: show the YouTube video about order of the planets when beginning an astronomy unit). Share the site with students and let them explore to find interesting topics for research reports. Ask students to choose one item from the site to share with other students as a way to practice oral presentation skills. Use videos or images as writing prompts or blog prompts. ESL/ELL students can practice their language skills by retelling a favorite video. Challenge your students to create their own informative videos on a topic that your class is exploring. In the Classroom
Try sharing this resource with students when they are creating podcasts, slideshows, and other media projects. This would also be great for performance groups such as drama clubs or musicals that need sound effects. Very creative students might like to actually tell a story through nothing but sound effects. Have them try making a "sound rebus" story on your class wiki, with words and sound links to tell what happens. Download sound effects and add them, worry-free, to projects or productions. Here you will find a new question each day for your students to practice their web search skills. Some are as simple as "How many cubits tall is the structure that houses the ZIP code 10118?" and others are more complicated, such as "If you were a ferry passenger traveling from Continental Europe to the country with twice as many sheep as people, in what town would you most likely dock?" The wind turbine plans vary in difficulty. Construct basic models from common materials such as Tinker Toys or create a more sophisticated one with a wind generator built from car alternators. This is a good resource for students interested in investigating for a science fair project about renewable energy. In the free curriculum area there are also lesson plans/activities (mainly pdfs) on energy efficiency, creating a hot air balloon, solar power, and more. Be aware: some of this site is for a fee.

Use experiential learning to model how higher-level math concepts have a direct correlation to current environmental issues. Learn to measure wind energy, calculate "gear ratios," the area of a blade's "sweep," measure the amount of energy or wind a turbine is producing.There is a range of lessons and activities here, some more complex than others. You may want to choose a few that fit your curricular needs and then allow small groups of students to investigate one together. Have student groups make an online Padlet, reviewed here, of things they discover about their topic, and later rearrange the items to "explain" their topic to classmates visually.

Identify how many atoms are put together, including how many bonds they form by using this as an introductory, inquiry activity. The Hayden Planetarium has created a free download of their atlas of the universe. The video, which does a great job of showing the scale of what we as humans can see in the universe, can be viewed directly from the website. There are two different versions of the download. Both are free. Be patient with the download, it takes a little while, however the atlas, educator activities, and simulations are well worth the time it takes. One of the hardest concepts for middle to high school level earth and space science learners to understand is size and scale of the universe. Their misconceptions of color and size stem from both brain development and images that they are exposed to of the solar system from young school ages on to middle school. This video and activity set help to clarify this misconception, and provide your learners with a better understanding of their size within the universe.

Try showing the video (on your interactive whiteboard or projector) at the beginning of a chapter or unit on universes and galaxies. Have students discuss what they think is correct or even incorrect about the video. As you work through your unit, use the teacher activities in addition to your traditional curriculum materials. Revisit the video at least twice throughout the unit to "check-in" on your student's understanding and to assess whether their misconceptions are being cleared. Another idea, is to show the video as a writing prompt for science. Pose a question such as, "How big are you? Explain in terms of the universe." Then, have students view the video and write about their ideas generated by the video.

An awesome feature to this site is that it has three different levels of knowledge and comprehension difficulty. The beginner level is roughly an eighth or ninth grade level while the intermediate level may be more appropriate for older high school students or advanced placement science classes. Brain topics on the site range from sleep and dreams to how the body brain connections work to move the body.

These multi-media lessons provide an alternative approach for young elementary students or ESL/ELL students trying to learn body parts. With song files and a video, this site makes it easy for language learners to acquire body part name knowledge easily. The video and song lyrics make the "Body Part" lesson entertaining and memorable. There is also a "Make a Face" interactive. To use the video part, download the "Realvideo" player. This is about the only items that are FREE at this site, but they are still worth a look if teaching body parts or expressions of the face.
In order to get the "free" printable cards, worksheets, and acompanying language games you must buy the Teacher's Set, Superpack, or Download Pack. However, the video and songs ARE free and fun!
