Are you looking for a new way to get your students excited about science? This neat site is based on the PBS show, Design Squad, but you can easily incorporate the activities and clips from the site without watching the show. There is a full educators guide available (see the Parents and Educator link) with ten engineering and inventive activities. The site also includes video clips, building activities, and interactive (educational) "games." Some of the building activities include "Watercraft," "Hidden Alarm," "Dance Pad Mania," and others. This resource also features "real life" challenges that students (or classes) are able to get involved with.

In the Classroom

The possibilities at this site are "inventive." Visit the games site to learn about sound and play an interactive "string thing." Have students work in cooperative learning groups to recreate the building activities. Share the video clips (or interactives) on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have your class complete one of the "real life" challenges together. If you can't do it during the competition months, go back and try one of the past competitions. Document it on a class wiki, then invite next year's class to do it even better by learning from "experience." Before you know it, kids will walk in the first day of school and ask when they get to try the challenge.

What do we see and what can we learn from the Sea floor? Use the Interactive map or the drop down along the top to access past expeditions to the sea floor. Click on the "Dive Into Deeper Discovery" tab to learn more about Deep Ocean Circulation, History of the Earth, Ice Ages, Ships and Technology, among others. Click the "For Teachers" tab to access and view classroom activities to use. The site is updated daily with photos, videos, and research.

In the Classroom

Use a single activity, have students collect information as homework, or a class project. Use these activities as an introduction to a science lesson or for application for information learned in class. Some activities have a hands-on component. Create a timeline of information, technology, or history from the dives. Have students use the scientific method to analyze work completed during the dives. Research background science and engineering topics for better understanding of information learned during the explorations. Topics for reports can be found throughout the information. The class can be divided into groups to report on specific aspects of the dive and their information can be reported to the class with the additional background information. Students can keep a journal of information learned and create a poster or model of the information.

From PBS, this site is associated with the series "Building Big." Unlike many sites that relate to a TV program, however, this site contains a number of excellent "stand-alone" features that can be integrated into more general lessons, and do not require students to have seen the series. The site is generally organized around five types of super sized engineering projects: bridges, domes, skyscrapers, tunnels, and dams. There are lesson plans tied to national standards, a neat searchable database of structures, some career-development content related to engineering, and information about the related television series. The highlights of this site are the flash-enabled interactive labs. They are outstanding. Illustrating basic principles of physics and engineering, students can experiment with building materials and see the impact of their choices on virtual buildings. Some activities at this site require Flash; however there is a lot to learn from the features that don't require Flash.

Use the database of structures to search out local engineering masterpieces, or to get information about important buildings that are associated with historical or geographic areas that the class is studying. For students considering a career in engineering, there is good information about the real lives of professionals in the field. The labs are perfect for an interactive whiteboard, and can illustrate physical properties in a visually powerful way. The short simulations could be used by students individually, or by teams of students investigating the principles of "building big."

Participate in engaging, collaborative projects for Science and Engineering education as you make science "real" from around the globe. Analyze water use in "Down the Drain" or participate in "Global Water Sampling." Record your area's temperature in "Global Temperature Data" to find the patterns between distance from equator and temperature, or investigate human traits in "Human Genetics." While in the project, browse additional links that include teacher guide, project instructions, data, discussion areas, galleries, and references. Downloads use Word, Excel, and Adobe acrobat. Right-click and "save target as" to download to your computer.

In the Classroom

To participate in the collaboration, complete the registration and enter data during the project window. What to do if you are not in the window time frame? Generate your data but compare instead of posting to the project. For an example, use the Human Genetics collaboration to survey the dominant traits present in your class. Students analyze their data and compare to the downloaded National data. Use the data from any collaboration for presentations, create recommendations (water use), and apply information to student lives. An interactive whiteboard would be a terrific tool for comparing and creating comparison graphs. Elementary teachers will want to combine these projects with geography lessons, too!

This online tool gives teachers an easy way to find and create rubrics to fit any project. Join for free, then browse existing rubrics made by others or create your own, starting from scratch or from a template provided. You can even make rubrics in Spanish. Search rubrics by keyword or by subject. Choose "permanent rubric" if you wish to save your rubric on the site for more than a week. You can use one of your previous rubrics as the basis for a new one, simply by choosing to "duplicate" it (then make changes). This site receives funding through the U.S. Dept of Ed, so they do "track" use by zip code. There is also a tool to analyze your rubric scores for a project, though it seems a bit cumbersome.

Use this tool to create rubrics in advance for any project you assign and share them with students. If you realize that you need to make changes before the final projects are turned it, it is easy to do so from the saved rubric. >

Once your students are completely familiar with the rubric process, consider allowing them to have input into designing a rubric to evaluate something: new inventions, the best way to solve an engineering problem, best mystery, the best design for a bridge, etc. Then use this tool together as you design a class rubric on an interactive whiteboard or projector. What a great way to develop higher order thinking skills!

Students dream about becoming an inventor. This site shows that even the smallest item in life, such as the paper clip, was once invented by 'someone.' You can promote creativity and encourage 'thinking outside the box' through this site. Play the 'Which Came First' game at this site to see if you can guess which invention came first, especially in conjunction with a social studies class on the inventors and industrial revolution. (Warning: It's harder than you think!) Or you may opt to play the 'Invention Connection' game, a challenging activity that builds higher level thinking through attribute listing and looking for common characteristics of diverse inventions. For pure information and inspiration, click on the five featured inventors to find video footage and other information about their lives and inventions.

This PBS site has Quick Time 360 degree views of the inside of a submarine, recordings of underwater sounds, a quiz about sound, and first person accounts of life aboard a military submarine. The quiz, focused on the science of sound, would be interesting in a science class, but the centerpiece of the site is the Quick Time tour of a military submarine. You can choose either the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear powered sub, or the USS Springfield, a more modern version.

Students, teachers, and parents can turn to this excellent resource for comprehensive help with science fair projects. At the top of the page is a video "Operation Build It." The first eight minutes are mostly about Home Depot's Kids workshops, but starting about 8:57 the video gets into students creating a workshop at home - tools they will need, safety ideas, and spaces to work. The rest of the video is mostly about kits that can be provided by Home Depot. Next, explore project Ideas which are categorized by Scientific and Engineering Ideas. Scientific Sreps include a brief explanation for each step and planning sheets for Elementary and Secondary students. finally there is the Presentation section with an example and completed directions and a materials list. Scroll down the page to explore different projects by year, Also, find resource on how to organize a science fair, and how to get parents involved in the process.

In the Classroom

Use these articles as a way to show how chemistry affects students' everyday life. Once a week, select a product and show it to students via printed article or via interactive whiteboard. Have students create concept maps or Graphic Organizers, reviewed here, showing how chemistry led to the creation of the product.
