Solar System Simulator - NASA
Grades
4 to 12tag(s): planets (113), solar system (110)
In the Classroom
Students use the simulator to explore different planets and moons. They create a travel brochure or postcard using Canva reviewed here for a chosen celestial body, describing its features, climate, and why someone might "visit." Students observe and compare planetary orbits in the simulator. They record differences in orbital speed, distance from the Sun, and revolution time, then discuss how these factors affect a planet's temperature and seasons. Using the simulator, students compare the sizes and distances of planets. They then create a scaled model using everyday objects (ex.: a basketball for Jupiter, a marble for Mercury) to represent the relative sizes and distances. Students design a space mission using the simulator. They pick a starting point (Earth, a spacecraft, or another planet) and determine the best route to another celestial body. They calculate travel time based on distances and research how NASA plans spaceflight routes.Genesis: Search for Origins - NASA

Include this site to supplement your current grade 6-12 science curriculum. Use the resources to differentiate instruction for gifted students in lower grades or as remediation for struggling students in older grades. Use the student materials for differentiating instruction or as homework. Have students share their learning or understanding of a topic with video explanations using a tool like Gravity. Gravity is a tool for video responses to a question along with comments from peers. Extend technology use in your classroom and take student learning a step further by asking them to create and share their own multimedia presentation along with suggestions for learning about their topic of interest. Use a tool like Sway. Sway is a presentation tool that offers multimedia options including text, video, and images.Interactive Astronomy Pages
