This guide is designed to accompany the Living Nations, Living Words poetry collection, featuring works by 47 Native American poets. The educator guide provides thoughtful lesson plans and activities that help students engage with themes of identity, resilience, and connection to land through poetry. The guide focuses on Indigenous perspectives and voices. It helps teachers create meaningful discussions in English/language arts, social studies, and cultural studies classrooms, fostering a deeper understanding of Native American contributions to literature and society.

tag(s): cultures (145), native americans (95), poetry (191)

In the Classroom

Have students create visual art pieces that represent the themes or imagery from selected poems. Assign students to research the cultural background and history of a specific Native American tribe represented in the poetry collection. Students select a poem from the Living Nations, Living Words collection and conduct a close reading. They analyze the poem's themes, imagery, and cultural significance. Ova Prima Foundation website is a clever satirical resource, presenting itself as an organization dedicated to studying fictional "Ovaprimates," a species that supposedly reproduces by laying eggs. Teachers can use this site to introduce students to media literacy by highlighting how easy it can be to create a professional-looking website filled with fabricated information. This resource serves as an excellent tool for teaching critical thinking and the importance of verifying sources and not believing everything encountered online at face value. It encourages students to question credibility and recognize the need for research in today's digital world.

tag(s): evaluating sources (28), internet safety (113), literacy (116), media literacy (106), satire (6)

In the Classroom

Assign students to explore the Ova Prima Foundation website and identify claims made about the fictional species. Then, have them use reliable online resources to fact-check the information. Students can work in groups to create satirical websites about a fictional species or event. Present students with articles from both real scientific websites, such as National Geographic or Scientific American, and The Ova Prima Foundation. Ask them to compare and contrast the language, claims, and structure of the two types of content. Provide students with a "red flags" checklist for unreliable websites (examples: no clear author, outlandish claims, lack of sources). They will mark which "red flags" appear as they explore The Ova Prima Foundation site. Like this activity? Here's another one: Save the Northwest Tree Octopus, reviewed here

Transform classic books into choose-your-own-adventure games using Playbrary and artificial intelligence (AI). Playbrary works with the free version of ChatGPT, reviewed here to generate interactive game choices using over one thousand books. Create games in one of two ways: use the "Play With Our Prompt Generator" link to select one of the books in the dropdown list, such as Jane Eyre and The Jungle Book, and choose "Generate." Follow the prompts in ChatGPT to play the interactive game. Use the "Play Now" link to select from a more extensive library of books on Playbrary and begin the choose-your-own-adventure game. After playing the game, players can borrow a digital version of their book. Always verify the accuracy of information shared when using AI tools.

In the Classroom

Engage students while reading and learning about classic novels using Playbrary's interactive features. For example, before reading a book, ask students to participate in the choose-your-own-adventure to get an introduction to the characters and settings of the story. Have students compare different story outcomes in the game to the actual story outcomes using tools available on Figjam, reviewed here. Visit the Figjam community to find several templates for your book study by searching for literature, such as a literature study template and a character trait study template. Extend learning using additional AI tools for educators, such as Twee, reviewed here and MagicSchool, reviewed here to generate additional book-related activities such as character analysis guides and project-based learning activities.

Minecraft Education shares several free videos, teaching resources, and parent guides to help you learn the basics of artificial intelligence (AI). These resources do not require using the paid Minecraft platform and are available to all viewers. Begin with a three-part animated video series that features AI basics, problem-solving with AI, and using AI tools responsibly. Additional materials available to download are classroom-ready teaching materials, a parent guide, and a free poster. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

Add the resources on this site to your current teaching resources about artificial intelligence. Share the videos with parents to help them understand AI basics. Consider using Padlet, reviewed here to share AI resources with parents and older students. For example, use the shelf option to create columns to organize information. Create a column with ideas on learning about AI, another column with generative AI tools that make images or generate ideas, and another column for AI learning tools such as historical figure chatbots.
