Satisfy your interest in the weather with Tree House Weather for Kids. Designed for students in grades 5-8, this site covers Seasons, Air Pressure, Clouds, and Rock and Roll Weather (types of storms, of course!). Leave the sound on to have text read as you proceed through each section, or turn off sound to read independently. Explore the small activity section containing quick practice activities for identifying clouds, weather forecasting, and exploring the distance to the sun. Another activity contains weather comics with a template for creating your own weather comic. Be sure to check out the Teacher's Guide for many additional resources and teaching ideas. Your Spanish-speaking students will also benefit from this site, simply click the "Espanol" link near the bottom of the page to view in Spanish. At the time this review was last updated, two of the activities were not working, however all of the content remained on the site.
In the Classroom
This is an excellent site for both in and outside the classroom! Use videos and information from the site to supplement your current resources for teaching weather. Create a link on classroom computers for students to explore on their own. Challenge students to create online, interactive posters, infographics or presentations using a tool such as Genial.ly, reviewed here. Have students create a word cloud of the important terms they learn from this site using a tool such as Word Clouds for Kids, reviewed here, or WordItOut, reviewed here.The Internet TESL Journal

There are quizzes on history, geography, grammar and science topics to name a few. Also has an Information section from the word list that is more like a mini Encyclopedia. The picture dictionary is a valuable tool for ESL/ELL students trying to communicate in a regular classroom.

Not only is this a great resource for ESOL teachers, but some of the terms that are hyperlinked even have attached worksheets and graphic organizers attached to help other teachers incorporate the "term" into their teaching. Just click the link to begin using the whiteboard tools. Share the URL with collaborators. Web Whiteboard also includes a direct link to create a whiteboard using Google Hangouts. In the Classroom
Allow students to create collaborative drawings as responses to literature. They can map out the plot or themes, add labels, create character studies, and more. Share the finished products on an interactive whiteboard, projector, or your class website. Have a group of students create a drawing that another group can use as a writing prompt. Use Web Whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space as groups or the class share ideas for a major project or to solve a real world problem. Use this site with students in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the setting in a story as it is read aloud. As a creative assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process such as how a democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOT setting, use Web Whiteboard to demonstrate and illustrate any concept while students use the chat and drawing tools to interact in real time. If you are studying weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and what happens during a thunderstorm, for example. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Alternatively, have students use this to work as partners or as a small team to complete complex math problems or equations. Give students a problem by typing it on their board. Be sure to check if the site is allowed as some districts filter game-type tools. Ask for permission for this educational site and then share with your students. News Flash Five Get the Scoop (part of PBS Kids), presents students with situations in need of a news story. Star reporters, ready, get set, and you are off to an investigation for your latest breaking news article. This interactive site offers graphics as well as written and spoken words to highlight all the information. While you navigate through the site, you visit several sources, and listen to the investigations. You can navigate to choose the sources and to take the information into a draft. After visiting various sources, you submit your news article to rate and get an assessment. To end your assignment, your editor rates your story and adds helpful hints to improve your writing.
