This emerging diseases interactive, which is part of the infectious disease module of the National Academy of Sciences is a tool that can be used in science, health, biology, and environmental science classes. The activity is simple to follow. The given map of the world has flashing yellow hot-spots that are clickable. Once clicked upon, students can read about what disease broke out, when it broke out, and the specific strain that caused the outbreak. One little note, if you are a student want to read about a specific hot-spot, be sure to click on the box once it pops up on the screen. Otherwise, the box disappears when you move your mouse to another place on the map.

In the Classroom

This web interactive could be a launch point for a cross curricular unit on diseases and culture. Students could start by using a hot-spot on the map to find an area of the world where there has been a disease outbreak. Student could read the short informative block on that outbreak from the website. From this point, students could research the organism, disease that it causes, and the mode of infection. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos about their research. Share the videos on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here. In world cultures classes, students could research the region, its customs and traditions. Then students could attempt to make connections between the customs of the area and the ways that they could effect the spread of disease, if they do. It is a great question to ask students, whether their day to day practices can cause or spread disease. Does the modern understanding of disease transmission and hygiene practice interfere or counter traditional practices of different regions of the world? Have them look for connections. Also, have different groups do different regions and diseases. Once their research has been completed, have students present as experts to their classmates. Have students use a mapping tool such as Click2Map, reviewed here, to create a map of their region/country/location (with display markers featuring text, photos, and videos!).

In the Classroom

Use these resources as a pre-unit activity to ecology or climate change. Brainstorm the issues presented as a class. Ask students what they already know about these problems. This is a great opportunity to provide time for student writing either in a conventional journal or on a blog. Allow time for students to generate questions about what they do not understand and plan the unit based upon these questions. Consider telling your own stories from your own area which can easily be published on a wiki, blog, or site. Use older relatives and community members that can discuss changes in weather, hunting, etc. in your area. Find records from past newspapers that help paint a picture of how our seasons and activities have changed over the year. Use many of the ideas from this site to brainstorm potential videos of change in your area.

This site, created by Australian Sean Banville of "Breaking News English" (reviewed here), has high interest, "easier" news for students to read and many teaching materials to go with them. Though the look of the site is cluttered with advertising and plain text, the content is worthwhile. Developed for ESL/ELL students and teachers, the site would also work well in a subject area, learning support, or reading classroom. There are MANY articles "ready to go," including mp3 audio files to listen to the articles. At the time of this review there were 200+ new additions! Each article includes several types of activities such as "online gap fill" (a Cloze reading activity), vocabulary flashcards, and hangman, and matching. A full script is available in pdf form. There is also an online, interactive quiz for students. The articles, and a lot more activities, can be downloaded and printed, too.

In the Classroom

The articles are short and interesting, a perfect match for non-fiction reading comprehension. With so many different activities to choose from, it will be easy for the classroom teacher to differentiate. There is an mp3 audio version of each article so students can listen as they read. Assign small groups of students to present the news each week, using the interactive whiteboard to show others the country and city from which the article originated. Make the newscasting experience even more real by having students read scripts of these news stories or their own original stories using a Easyprompter, reviewed here. Students can then go to another news source such as 4 News Wall, reviewed here, to see what else is happening in the news. For a projecth and to enhance student learning, have the small groups create a "talking map" using a site such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. This site allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location (where their article/story took place). What a fabulous way to share the article with the rest of the class!

"Speak Up" is a straightforward cartoon-creator site meant to teach the importance of character, setting, problem, and solution. The site provides possible characters, settings, and conflicts from which students can choose. Creating cartoons is an effective way to teach students how to write stories with a clear storyline and structure. The story problem section allows students to write in their own scenarios. Students are responsible for creating the solution to the story problem themselves. Each cartoon strip contains six boxes, allows two characters per page, and speaking bubbles as well as narrative box across the bottom of the page.

In the Classroom

Use "Speak Up" as part of a mini-lesson about problem and solution or dialogue. Have students create their own cartoons as part of a craft lesson. Print out the cartoon and students can use it as an outline to help them write narrative text or plays. Demonstrate how to combine narration with dialogue in one text from this cartoon outline.

Use scenarios of social conflicts your class may be facing or are currently discussing in character education. For example, use bullying or peer pressure issues. Pair up classmates to re-tell a conflict similar to those students face during recess, in class, or from home. Together they can discuss ways to solve these conflicts. Use the results to open up dialogue about student issues and as a tool to brainstorm constructive ways to solve them.

World language teachers or ESL/ELL teachers can also use this tool for students to practice written dialog and appropriate social interaction.

There are videos that range in length and topic (split pelvis, gastrointestinal track, and several others). Some videos are only 5-7 minutes while others are nearly 30 minutes. Warning: These are graphic displays of human cadavers used for medical training purposes. You will want to preview videos before you share with middle school students. Check whether your school has any policies about obtaining parent permission before sharing graphic images.

This site offers media (found on YouTube, Vimeo, and Flickr) on a broad spectrum of topics, not created for kids but appropriate and interesting for children 3 years old and up. Media isn't divided into categories. The newest items appear first. However, you can search the site by keyword. Information ranges from animal stories of a dog without legs to video of Ella Fitzgerald scatting. Obviously, this site is updated frequently, so contents will change. Students and adults alike will love browsing for interesting stories and information.

Check first to be sure the media are not blocked by school web filtering. Choose one item from the site to share on your interactive whiteboard or projector as a class discussion starter on current topics or as a lead-in to a lesson. (Example: show the YouTube video about order of the planets when beginning an astronomy unit). Share the site with students and let them explore to find interesting topics for research reports. Ask students to choose one item from the site to share with other students as a way to practice oral presentation skills. Use videos or images as writing prompts or blog prompts. ESL/ELL students can practice their language skills by retelling a favorite video. Challenge your students to create their own informative videos on a topic that your class is exploring. Share the videos using a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here.

This webpage on the evolution of disease provides clear information about how natural selection works with infectious agents. It also addresses the concept of exponential growth. After reading the information, click on the flash clip at the bottom of the first page to view a simulation of how a single E.coli bacteria reproduces. You can also find information on HIV, Malaria, TB, and more. This is a great image for having students understand bacterial reproduction.

In the Classroom

Use this to teach evolution, bacteria, or population growth in biology and environmental science. This will help students better understand how bacteria reproduce, and why disease causing organisms are so very successful. Start a lesson on bacteria infections by asking students "why is bacteria such a big problem?" Ask students whether they think bacteria as a species are successful or not. Have students read and watch the flash simulation. Have students discuss the rate of growth, and make sure to point out that the simulation is timed just the way that bacteria reproduce in nature. This would also make a good lead into a conversation about how not all evolution is good for the human species. It will help to point out that humans are just another animal species, and need to be studied as such.

An awesome feature to this site is that it has three different levels of knowledge and comprehension difficulty. The beginner level is roughly an eighth or ninth grade level while the intermediate level may be more appropriate for older high school students or advanced placement science classes. Try using this site as a research site for students working on individual or small group projects about the brain. Have students create their own mini site about a different organ of the body. Another idea, have students create a tiered report much like the format of this website. These multi-media lessons provide an alternative approach for young elementary students or ESL/ELL students trying to learn body parts. With song files and a video, this site makes it easy for language learners to acquire body part name knowledge easily. The video and song lyrics make the "Body Part" lesson entertaining and memorable. There is also a "Make a Face" interactive. To use the video part, download the "Realvideo" player. This is about the only items that are FREE at this site, but they are still worth a look if teaching body parts or expressions of the face.

In order to get the "free" printable cards, worksheets, and acompanying language games you must buy the Teacher's Set, Superpack, or Download Pack. However, the video and songs ARE free and fun!

When discussing foods, biomolecules, or the food groups or portion control, use this site as a tremendous resource that discusses not only scientific facts but how nutrients act in the body. Use this information and search for other information to validate or dispute the information. Create a healthy discussion about web resources and credibility. Encourage students to pick a nutrition issue they would like to know more about and research to create a multimedia presentation (blog or wiki post, podcast, or video) or conventional (bulletin board, poster, or pamphlet) display of the information. WordSift helps anyone easily sift through texts -- just copy and paste any text into WordSift and you can engage in a verbal quick-capture! The program helps to quickly identify important words that appear in the text. After entering text several items will appear, first a word cloud will display the 50 most frequently used words in the text. The most frequently used word will display as a word web in a visual thesaurus. Google image and video search results are also shown. One interesting feature is the ability to click on any of the words in the word cloud to display it in the thesaurus and Google image and video searches. A great way to understand the WordSift tool is to try one of the sample texts offered, such as Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Be sure to check out the "About" link to discover many ideas for use in the classroom. Tips and videos are also available as guides. If you type in a shorter sentence, the site still creates a word cloud using their own related words (not in your original text). Be aware of the advertisements that appear with the word clouds. Advise students not to click on the ads.

In the Classroom

This is a classic tool to promote "before reading" strategies and vocabulary development. Use WordSift to preview text to be used in class and define vocabulary before reading to increase reading comprehension. Have students use WordSift with different portions of text to identify key words and vocabulary for class presentations. Use WordSift to discuss different meanings of words using images presented through the site. This site isn't only for English teachers, share with Science and Social Studies teachers to use in their classrooms with reading texts in their content areas. ESL/ELL and learning support teachers will want to share this as a support for any reading assigned in regular classes. Be sure to show students how to copy/paste to WordSift texts from informational web pages and news stories on the web, as well. In the Classroom

Use this site as a research tool or to provide practice reading informational texts in the content areas. Choose an article relevant to what you are teaching, post it on your website or wiki, and have your students discuss what the article means and how it made them think. Since the articles are heavy with text, you may want to have students work in small groups to read the article you have selected for them, and use a tool such as Mindmeister (reviewed here) or bubbl.us (reviewed here) to create a concept map of the important ideas and their details for the article. Each article has several related links. Have each group choose a different one to explore, and create a concept map to share on your interactive whiteboard or projector so all can benefit from the related articles. Once created, the concept maps can be posted as links or embedded on your teacher website or wiki for review and to share with parents. If the text of the articles is simply too challenging without some "before reading" help, show students how to preview it using WordSift, reviewed here.

Brimming with color and current science information, this site is a great current happenings resource. To post to the blog, students must sign up, but the site promises no spamming from the sign up. The confirmation email does take some time to arrive, and the buzz requires verification before a user can participate. Read tips for safely managing email registrations here.

The articles contained in this site are to the point, clear to understand, and in a large font. There are very few distractions going on in the site. It is easy to navigate and has a cool teacher tool in the buzz blog. Click on the Community tab, and the blogs are indexed by standards and grouped into topics such as earth science and physical science with subtopics.

In the Classroom

This site would be a great resource for current events projects. Students could be assigned a specific article to read, and then post to a discussion forum on the class wiki or another internet discussion board that is acceptable at school. Or have students make a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here.

In the Classroom

Use the Leader's Guide for lessons that educators can use in the classroom. Assign different students or groups of students different bright papers to read in order to glean bits of material worth sharing. Give time for mini presentations, creation of conventional or multimedia projects, create a wiki of essential information and more. Have students make a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Assign a food journal to students to maintain and have other students analyze the diaries and make suggestions for improvements and deficiencies.

If the simple answer is not enough for you, there are helpful links, and suggested additional reading if you would like a greater understanding of the concept. Even more information is available through using the categorized science facts found on the left side of the screen. Questions are also searchable by keyword. Subjects include: physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, mathematics, geology, engineering, and medicine.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Try using this site's questions on a weekly or daily basis in science or math class to start discussions and provoke student thinking. Allow students to view the question on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then brainstorm possible answers. Once enough thoughts have been seeded, share the real answers. Or, allow students to work at the answer as the lesson continues for a few days and reveal the correct answer as a finale to the lesson.

This site could also be used as a learning station for the question of the day or the week.

Try using this site multiple times in a life science class or a health class as you have students work their way through the body systems. It would make a great addition to any health or life science class where the human body is being taught. In the Classroom

Use questions as a good bank of "hooks" to start classroom discussions on various topics. Allow students time to expand the question and arrive at their own answers, and then have them view the actual given answer. From here, students can accept or reject the answer by finding more information on the topic.
