This virtual romp through a dirt pile explores the many microbes that surround us. Students can visit the Animal Pavilion, Waterworld, Outer Space, Dirtland (which includes a rather eye-opening walk through a typical home), and even the Snack Bar - where foods created by microbial action are investigated. Both beneficial and dangerous microbes are discussed. A very entertaining introduction to the invisible world!

Watch plants change and grow with these time-lapse movies that illustrate germination, circadian responses, tropic and nastic movements, and more. The images can be enjoyed by students of all ages -elementary kids will love watching the plants "dance" - but the text on the site is fairly high level and appropriate for high school biology classes.

This kid-friendly site takes a very unique look at the life and times of worms. Students can read about the migration of worms from Europe to American against the backdrop of colonial American history (and you thought the Mayflower carried only pilgrims!), and compare their own family tree with that of Herman's. The site also includes instructions for creating and maintaining a worm bin in the classroom, and great information on worm taxonomy, anatomy, and food preferences. Check out the interactive worm activities and games, as well as the helpful hints in the Teacher's Bin. Also available in Spanish.

In the Classroom

Have students try out this site on individual computers, or as a learning center. Encourage students to look at all part of the website, and then participate in the drawing entries! Students from all over the country have drawn pictures of worms and their habitats, sent them in, and they are now displayed on the website. Students motivated by having their art "published" could produce some very interesting work!

Genetics can be a fairly weighty topic, but this site breaks down complex concepts into easy-to-understand language. Click on each of the six topics - DNA, genes, chromosomes, proteins, heredity, traits - and walk through the videos that provide in-depth descriptions and helpful visuals.

tag(s): dna (44), genetics (76)

In the Classroom

Before using this site, you may want to assess what students know about DNA, and genetics. Put together an assessment asking about basic information using a tool like SurveyPlanet, reviewed here, where you can use a variety of formats including multiple choice, open-ended, images, and more. Then have students preview the first exercise for words they don't know and create flashcards using Flashcard Stash, reviewed here. After completion of the exercise, ask students to reflect on their learning using Flip, reviewed here. Flip allows students to share video responses through collaborative comments and discussions. Require students to comment on at least 3 other students learning reflections. Be sure you've coached students in proper discussion etiquette whether online or in class.

Browse through pencil-and-ink industrial drawings of shopping carts, Crayola crayons, T-shirts, and more. A useful resource for gaining insight into American culture and the creative process.

Use the images on this site to compliment a lecture on the inventions of the 20th century. While the test is interesting, it might be a little much for a class for of lower-level readers. Include the images as a way to capture the simplicity of original designs, and compare the initial plans of these inventions to the mega-products they are today. The images are interesting, particularly the Crayola tests, and will capture kids attention as they are inventions that have impacted their own lives in a big way.
