Module 3:
Differentiating the Products
One fairly simple and effective way to differentiate learning consists of giving students various options of how to express their required learning and goals. Additionally, students can use various technology tools to enhance their learning and reach their goals.
Utilize rubrics that match and extend learners’ various skill levels. This will help students have clear expectations about their desired achievements and ways to meet their specific goals. We offer extensive content about rubrics in our Rubrics to the Rescue unit, which you might find helpful as you create new rubrics for your learners.
You may also encourage students to think creatively about the ways in which they can meet their learning goals by creating products that demonstrate their new required knowledge. Choice boards are another great option, as learners can decide which way or ways to show that they have met the learning objectives.
Lastly, differentiating assessments and thinking carefully about appropriate pacing and learning outcomes is also important. Not all students will require the same amount of time to complete a test or other assessment. Some may need less time, while others will need more time. Consider breaking assessments into smaller portions or provide a testing break when needed.
