In the Classroom

Engage students in learning about the many different stories behind the Holocaust by including materials found on the PBS site within your lessons. Enhance learning by asking students to work in small groups to analyze primary source documents related to the U.S. response to the Holocaust. For example, share The Timeline of the Holocaust at Teaching With Testimony, reviewed here as a resource for understanding the timeline of events that features many primary source images. Extend student understanding and reflection of the Holocaust through a debate activity. Divide the class into two groups and have them debate whether the U.S. should have done more to help Jews during the Holocaust. Encourage students to research and prepare arguments and provide opportunities for both groups to present their cases and respond to each other. Create and edit videos using an online tool such as FlexClip, reviewed here.

Pinecast is a podcast hosting service that offers a free option and helpful tips for creating and sharing podcasts. The free option includes uploads of up to 48MB, two free shows with up to ten episodes, and no time limit. First, use your email to create and verify an account. Once logged in to your account, select the link to set up a podcast from scratch. Then, complete the information boxes to provide your podcast's name and description information. After completing the basic information, it is time to upload a new episode by following the steps that include providing a title, adding an MP3 file, date and time of the episode's release. Save when ready, then share your podcast using the custom URL provided.

Use Pinecast in a variety of ways in your classroom. First, let students become familiar with how to create audio files by practicing creating and sharing voice recordings of read-alouds. Then, as students become familiar with this tool, use it as a simple tool for uploading and sharing audio productions. For example, ask students to use Pinecast to record interviews with parents or other family members. For example, when studying immigration, ask students to record the story of a family member who immigrated to the U.S. Include student-created podcasts as a link within larger multimedia projects such as those created using Sway, reviewed here, or within an interactive map project made with Google My Maps, reviewed here.

This TeachersFirst Reading Trek, based upon the novel Currents authored by Jane Smolik, a historical novel about three girls who live in different places but are connected by a bottle that travels across the ocean. The Reading Trek provides a virtual field trip of resources using the Maps features of Google Maps. Raindrop.io provides real-time collaboration for teams along with the ability to add notes to share with peers. Engage students in the learning process by creating and sharing infographics using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here. Ask student teams to create infographics sharing different portions of the information within a lesson. For example, when using the education resources, have a student group create infographics depicting facts about the fight for desegregation, another share facts about busing, and another with re-segregation factions and images.

In the Classroom

Be sure to view these free materials to use as a supplement to your current social studies lessons and character education activities, including empathy. These materials also are an excellent way to demonstrate the use of primary sources as a learning tool. As a final project and to extend learning, ask students to use Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here, to share their projects demonstrating their inspiration for the future. Adobe Express offers a variety of creation tools, making it easy to provide options for students to choose how to share their learning. Provide students the option to create a video, build a webpage, or create a series of custom graphics as part of a multimedia presentation.

If you teach about immigration, be sure to save this site as an excellent resource of lesson ideas and more. Use the print icon to print out any lesson without the graphics and other images on the site. Consider teaching your lessons using a resource like Actively Learn, reviewed here. Actively Learn is an awesome tool that allows for easy curating and distributing reading resources to students. They can read digitally, take notes, and take assessments on the website. During your lesson, ask students to share their learning by creating infographics. Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, is a very easy to use tool for creating and sharing interesting infographics. If discussing global immigration, consider enhancing student learning by dividing students into groups to create infographics from different areas around the world. Share all of your students' designs on your class website for students to review and access anywhere. As a culminating project, enhance student's learning by challenging them to create a multimedia presentation including videos, text, infographics, and more using Sway, reviewed here.

In the Classroom

Since the topic of immigration can be a sensitive issue in any American classroom today, you may want to use the lessons in From Provocative to Productive, reviewed here to introduce how to have a respectful discussion (and develop critical thinking skills along the way). Once you feel students are versed a bit in diplomacy, use Immigration Nation as an introduction making sure students know the facts about becoming a citizen in the United States. Share the game on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. In order to assure your students know the requirements before participating in a discussion of this hot political issue, you may want to play with the entire class first, reminding students they need to learn the facts before they can effectively debate the issues. Then allow students to play on their own on the whiteboard or classroom computers, keeping a log of their actions and results. Once students know the facts, you could set up a discussion using Thinkalong, reviewed here to practice their discussion and argument strategies. With older students, a next step might be to take the debate public using Virtual Debate, reviewed here which has online examples and resources for conducting virtual debates.

Include this video with your other resources for students using a bookmarking tool like Symbaloo EDU, reviewed here. Symbaloo includes icons to make organizing and sharing information easy for any topic. Enhance learning by asking students to interview family members to learn about immigrants in their family tree or research famous immigrants. Have them create a webpage using Hashify, reviewed here to share information about their family member including country they came from, reasons for leaving, their immigration experience, and their life in America. In addition to telling stories about immigrants, create a timeline using Time Graphics Timeline Maker, reviewed here that allows you to create interactive timelines.

View all of the stories here. Each short video includes information about the participant and a downloadable transcript. Click on tags to find additional videos from participants discussing the same country or region.

In the Classroom

Have your ESL/ELL students share their stories here (with permission from parents) when doing a biography writing unit. Have all students search for stories of immigrants whose ethnic background resembles their own. Have each student choose one story to read about and share a quick multimedia project with the class, such as a simple online posters using PicLits, reviewed here. Ask students who have a relative who is an immigrant to interview them, and then use a tool such as the 3 Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here, to compare the experiences. This could be done using a story from the same country, or other countries. Use stories from this site as a writing prompt for a poem or digital story about an aspect of immigrant life, asking students to put themselves in the immigrant's shoes. For presentations of digital stories challenge students to use Presentious, reviewed here. This tool allows narrating and adding text to a picture. For the advanced digital atudent and teacher challenge them to create their story as a game using Pencil Code Gym, reviewed here.

Top ten lists select charities based on most followed, celebrity related, relying on public contributions, top notch, low rated, a charity worth watching, as well as many more categories. Learn about charities formed to help recent events (Hot Topics) such as Earthquake & Hurricane victims, California Wildfires, Support Veterans and Active Duty Servicemembers, Immigration and Refugees, and many others. The Hot Topics change with the times, of course, so check back regularly. Learn tips for donating such as the Tax Benefits of Giving, a Guide to Volunteering, and the 5 Steps to Informed Giving includes giving in the workplace and questions to ask before donating.

Inspire your students to find worthy causes to give back and help other people in need. Give character education programs real purpose by discovering the many ways people need help. Challenge students to become an active part of your community and help others. Each class can choose a favorite charity to support through time or donations. Throughout the year, find ways to volunteer, collect money, or make a difference. Keep a class blog documenting progress, plans, ideas, and experiences. Substitute pen and paper writing journals by having students create blogs sharing their experiences using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, challenge your students to create a blog using Edublog, reviewed here. This is a "gift" to those who are interested in having their students realize that where they donate can be researched. Furthermore it shows how many are working to improve the world across multiple categories. This helps foster critical analysis. My students will be selecting a charity and arguing for its support. In the Classroom

Share this timeline on your interactive whiteboard as an introduction to your unit on immigration. You could show the history of immigration and discuss the U.S. as a nation of immigrants. Use a tool such as Thinkalong, reviewed here, for students to debate about this topic, or any hot topic. It is interesting to note that there are many more events for the most recent twenty-five years than there are for all the previous years. Use this as a starting point for students to research and find additional information to add. Have students transform their learning and create their own timelines (with music, photos, videos, and more) using Timeline JS, reviewed here.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911 represents a turning point in the history of labor relations and workers' rights to a safe work environment. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the fire, and in tribute to the 146 young, immigrant workers who lost their lives largely due to unsafe working conditions, you'll find an overview of the fire and the circumstances that led up to it. There are a large number of historical images of the building itself, primary documents related to the event, newspaper accounts of the investigation and trial, brief biographies of the victims, as well as interviews with survivors (19 were women). Audio recordings of oral histories from three survivors, and transcripts of those interviews are a valuable resource.

A particularly rich source of primary documents, photographs, and interviews with survivors, add this to your resources for lessons on the labor movement, stories of early 20th century immigration, and women's history. There is a helpful section for students on using primary documents and resources, and an excellent bibliography. During Women's History Month challenge students to compare women's labor issues in 1911 with the labor issues women have today. Use an online tool such as Lucidchart, reviewed here, or the Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here. Be sure and include this information as a resource for Women in History Month or National History Day projects.

The Past/Present interactive will project you into the world of 1906 labor disputes and immigration. Set in a New England mill town, the characters are an immigrant female worker and a male manager. These two must use critical thinking skills to make decisions that can affect their families and the community. Learn about organized labor, industrialization, and immigration in the Progressive era. Learn how to use primary sources and build historical thinking and teamwork skills. From the menu at the top, click on play to find a video on Vimeo or YouTube to get you started. Clicking on the Teachers tab will give you plenty of information about how to get started, assignments, and even a peek at the ending in case you run out of time. The Students tab has the student home and assignment documents (in PDF format).

In the Classroom

Prepare to use this activity in your classroom by thoroughly exploring the documentation and videos before you plan to use it. Introduce this interactive to students on a projector or whiteboard using the demo videos and videos about Anna and Walter. Next, have students pair up and sign up for an account. One must be Walter, and one must be Anna. The characters both meet the same townspeople and participate in the same global events, but the roles and social positions are different, so they will have different tasks. Pairing students will allow for maximum participation in post-activity discussions.
